Chapter 12: The Last Confession of Thomas Hayes

The mansion remained silent long after the video ended.
No one knew what to say.
Because everyone in that room had just witnessed something impossible.
A confession from a dead woman.
A warning from the past.
A threat against a child who did not even know what an empire was.
Emma was still holding my hand.
She did not understand the meaning behind the words.
She only understood that the adults around her looked afraid.
And children always notice fear.
“Mama…”
I looked down.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Are they angry?”
My heart broke.
Because that was the only thing she cared about.
Not money.
Not inheritance.
Not power.
Just whether the people around her were angry.
I pulled her closer.
“No, baby.”
But my voice betrayed me.
She looked at me.
“Mama is scared.”
I closed my eyes.
Because she was right.
Lucia Moretti stood in the center of the room.
The video had exposed her.
Her plan.
Her lies.
Her betrayal.
Yet she still looked calm.
Almost disappointed.
Like everyone else had simply taken too long to understand something she considered obvious.
“You think you know everything now,” Lucia said.
Alessandro stared at her.
“I know enough.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You know what I wanted you to see.”
The room became tense.
Victor stepped forward.
“You recorded that message yourself.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Lucia looked at him.
“Because one day, the truth would need to survive without me.”
Alessandro laughed bitterly.
“Truth?”
He stepped closer.
“You destroyed innocent people.”
“I protected my family.”
“You destroyed my father.”
Lucia’s expression hardened.
“Your father destroyed himself.”
The sentence was like a knife.
Alessandro froze.
“What?”
Lucia continued.
“Your father was willing to give everything away.”
“To whom?”
She looked at Emma.
“To them.”
The answer shocked everyone.
“The Hayes family was not supposed to inherit anything.”
Victor shook his head.
“That’s not true.”
Lucia turned toward him.
“You know nothing.”
“I know your husband trusted Thomas Hayes.”
“And he was wrong.”
For years, my father had been remembered as a traitor.
A thief.
A criminal.
But now every piece of evidence pointed somewhere else.
I needed answers.
Not for myself.
For Daniel.
For my father.
For Emma.
I stepped forward.
“Where is the rest of the evidence?”
Everyone turned toward me.
Lucia looked surprised.
Maybe she expected me to stay silent.
Maybe she expected the poor housekeeper to disappear when powerful people started fighting.
But she had forgotten something.
I had survived losing everything.
There was nothing left for me to fear.
“You know where it is,” I said.
Lucia studied me.
“You sound like your father.”
“That’s because he raised me.”
A small smile appeared on her face.
“Exactly why he was dangerous.”
“Where is the evidence?”
She said nothing.
Alessandro moved closer.
“Answer her.”
Lucia looked at him.
“You still protect her.”
“She is innocent.”
“No.”
Lucia looked at Emma.
“She is powerful.”
The way she said it made my blood run cold.
Like Emma was not a child.
Like she was a weapon.
Then Victor remembered something.
A detail from fifteen years ago.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The letter.”
Alessandro turned.
“What?”
Victor walked toward the table.
“Thomas Hayes said there was one more message.”
I looked at him.
“The letter only had part of it.”
Victor nodded.
“He hid the real information.”
“Where?”
Victor looked at me.
“With the person he trusted most.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
Victor answered:
“Daniel Bennett.”
The world tilted.
My husband.
Daniel.
The man I loved.
The man who died before Emma could even remember him.
He had known.
He had carried secrets.
And he had never told me.
“Why would Daniel hide this from me?”
Victor looked sad.
“Because he was protecting you.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice cracked.
“No, he promised me he would never hide things from me.”
Victor looked down.
“Sometimes people break promises because keeping them would get someone killed.”
Those words hurt.
Because they sounded exactly like something Daniel would have done.
Alessandro ordered a search of Daniel’s old belongings.
Everything I had kept after his death was brought to the mansion.
A small box.
Old photographs.
A broken watch.
Some papers.
Things nobody else would consider valuable.
But inside that box was a secret.
A hidden compartment.
I had never known it existed.
Victor opened it carefully.
Inside was a small key.
And a note.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
Daniel’s handwriting.
My breath caught.
Clara,
If you found this, then they already know about Emma.
I covered my mouth.
The letter continued.
I wanted to tell you everything. Every day.
But every day I saw someone watching us.
Every day I became more certain that the truth would put you and our daughter in danger.
Tears blurred my vision.
I need you to trust Alessandro Moretti.
I stopped.
Alessandro looked at me.
Even he seemed shocked.
He is not his family’s darkness.
He is the person who can protect Emma when I no longer can.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel had trusted Alessandro.
Before I ever met him.
Before any of this happened.
The final lines shook me.
The key opens the place where Thomas Hayes hid everything.
The truth about both families.
But be careful.
A pause.
Then:
The person who wants Emma is closer than you think.
Everyone looked around the room.
Because suddenly anyone could be the enemy.
A servant.
A friend.
A family member.
Someone who had been watching.
Someone who had been waiting.
Then the mansion lights went out again.
A scream came from downstairs.
Security rushed toward the sound.
Seconds later, a guard appeared.
His face was pale.
“Mr. Moretti…”
Alessandro turned.
“What happened?”
The guard swallowed.
“Someone attacked Victor.”
Everyone froze.
“Is he alive?”
The guard hesitated.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But before he lost consciousness…”
He looked at me.
“He said one name.”
My heart sank.
“Whose name?”
May you like
The guard whispered:
“Daniel Bennett.”
