Chapter 2: The Empty Promise

Vanessa’s bedroom was exactly what everyone expected.
Expensive.
Perfect.
Artificial.
The walls were covered with paintings worth more than houses. The closet was larger than my entire apartment. Designer dresses hung in perfect rows, untouched and arranged like museum pieces.
But the room was missing something.
A personal touch.
No family pictures.
No memories.
No proof of a life.
Just luxury.
Alessandro entered first.
The security team followed.
I stayed outside with Emma.
I didn’t want to see.
I didn’t want to be responsible for what happened next.
Because sometimes the truth is heavier than a lie.
A few seconds later, someone inside said:
“Mr. Moretti.”
Everyone heard the tone.
The tone of someone who had found something.
Alessandro walked out holding a small white box.
The flower pattern was visible.
The same one Emma had described.
The same one from the camera.
The room erupted.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.”
It was barely a whisper.
Alessandro opened the box.
Inside was the silicone pregnancy belly.
Perfectly shaped.
Realistic enough to fool anyone who wanted to believe.
A woman nearby gasped.
A senator stepped backward.
Someone whispered:
“She was faking it?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
But this time nobody rushed to comfort her.
Because tears were no longer enough.
“Alessandro,” she said softly.
“I can explain.”
He stared at her.
“Explain what?”
Her lips trembled.
“I was scared.”
The room went silent.
“Scared of what?”
She looked down.
“Losing you.”
That answer surprised everyone.
Even Alessandro.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don’t understand what it feels like to be with someone like you.”
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone wants something from you. Your money. Your name. Your power.”
She touched his arm.
“I thought if I gave you a family, you would finally choose me.”
For a second…
Just a second…
I saw something change in Alessandro’s expression.
Not forgiveness.
Something closer to disappointment.
Because maybe the worst betrayal is not discovering someone hated you.
It is discovering they loved you only for what you represented.
“You were going to let me announce a fake heir?” he asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“I thought I could make it real.”
Nobody understood.
“What does that mean?” Alessandro asked.
She said nothing.
That silence was enough.
His eyes narrowed.
“Vanessa.”
A security officer suddenly appeared at the doorway.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Everyone turned.
“We found something else.”
The officer handed him an envelope.
Alessandro opened it.
Read it.
And his entire face changed.
“What is it?” someone asked.
He ignored them.
His eyes moved toward me.
Then toward Emma.
I felt cold.
“What happened?” I whispered.
Alessandro walked toward us slowly.
The envelope remained in his hand.
“Clara.”
My heart dropped.
“Yes?”
“Your husband’s name was Daniel Bennett?”
The room disappeared.
Nobody had mentioned Daniel.
Nobody here knew.
“How do you know that?”
Alessandro looked at the paper.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t only hiding a fake pregnancy.”
May you like
He looked at me.
“She was investigating you.”
