Chapter 13: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The name echoed through the mansion.

Daniel Bennett.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room understood the impossible meaning behind those two words.

Daniel Bennett had been dead for three years.

A funeral had been held.

A grave had been buried.

A death certificate had been signed.

I had stood beside his coffin.

I had watched the earth cover the man I loved.

I had gone home alone with a newborn baby and a broken heart.

So when the guard said Victor’s final words were Daniel’s name…

My first reaction was anger.

Not fear.

Anger.

“That’s impossible.”

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“I’m only telling you what he said.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Daniel is dead.”

Alessandro looked at me.

But he did not immediately agree.

That scared me.

Because Alessandro Moretti was a man who questioned everything.

And right now, he was questioning my husband’s death.

Victor was found in the west corridor.

He was alive.

Barely conscious.

A small cut on his forehead.

A bruised shoulder.

But before the doctors moved him, Alessandro demanded answers.

“Who attacked him?”

The security chief shook his head.

“No cameras caught anyone entering.”

“Impossible.”

“I know.”

Alessandro looked toward the hallway.

“Then someone was already inside.”

Nobody liked that answer.

Because it meant the threat was not outside the mansion.

It was among them.

Hours later, Victor woke up.

The first thing he said was my name.

“Clara.”

I rushed to his side.

“What happened?”

His eyes moved around the room.

Then toward Alessandro.

“Where is she?”

Everyone froze.

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Who?”

Victor swallowed.

“Daniel’s wife.”

My heart tightened.

“I’m here.”

Victor looked at me.

His expression was filled with sadness.

“I’m sorry.”

Those two words frightened me more than anything else.

“Why?”

He closed his eyes.

“Because I should have told you years ago.”

“Told me what?”

Victor looked at Alessandro.

Then back at me.

“Daniel Bennett never died.”

The room stopped.

I could not hear anything.

Not the machines.

Not the rain.

Not the people around me.

Only those words.

Never died.

I stared at Victor.

“No.”

My voice was barely a whisper.

“No, you’re wrong.”

Victor looked heartbroken.

“I wish I was.”

I stepped back.

“You saw his body?”

“No.”

“His funeral?”

“No.”

“Then how can you say this?”

Victor lowered his eyes.

“Because I helped create the lie.”

The confession shattered me.

Victor explained everything.

Three years ago, Daniel discovered proof connecting Lucia Moretti and Vanessa’s father to the financial crimes that destroyed both families.

He planned to expose them.

But someone found out.

Someone powerful.

Someone who could reach anyone.

Including his family.

“Daniel realized they would kill Clara and Emma if he exposed the truth,” Victor said.

“So he disappeared.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

My voice broke.

“He abandoned us.”

Victor looked at me.

“No.”

“He let me believe he was dead.”

“Because he believed that grief was safer than being hunted.”

I laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

“Do you know what that did to me?”

Nobody answered.

Because they knew.

They knew there was no answer.

I had spent three years mourning a man who might have been alive.

Three years raising our daughter alone.

Three years believing I was abandoned.

Alessandro stepped forward.

“Where is he?”

Victor looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

“You must know something.”

“He left clues.”

“What clues?”

Victor reached into his jacket.

A small piece of paper.

He handed it to Alessandro.

Only four words were written.

Find me where it began.

Alessandro stared.

“Where what began?”

Victor looked at me.

“Your husband was trying to find Thomas Hayes’ final evidence.”

I felt numb.

“And?”

“And he found it.”

Everyone became silent.

“Where?”

Victor whispered:

“The old Moretti estate.”

The old Moretti estate.

A place abandoned fifteen years ago.

The original family home.

Before the mansion.

Before Alessandro inherited the empire.

Before the betrayal.

A place nobody visited anymore.

Except apparently Daniel.

That night, Alessandro made a decision.

“We go there.”

I looked at him.

“You’re taking me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His answer surprised me.

“Because this concerns your family too.”

I looked away.

“Your family destroyed mine.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

The honesty caught me off guard.

Then he added:

“But my family destroyed yours because someone wanted us divided.”

A pause.

“And I’m tired of letting dead people control our lives.”

Before leaving, Emma ran toward Alessandro.

She held something in her hand.

A small drawing.

“Take this.”

He looked down.

“What is it?”

She smiled.

“For when you’re scared.”

Alessandro looked at the drawing.

A simple picture.

A house.

Three people.

And a fourth person standing behind them.

He pointed.

“Who is that?”

Emma smiled.

“Your friend.”

Alessandro frowned.

“I don’t have a friend there.”

Emma looked confused.

“Yes, you do.”

“Who?”

She pointed at the figure.

“The man who watches the house.”

Everyone froze.

I knelt beside her.

“Emma, what man?”

She looked toward the window.

“The man Daddy talked to.”

My heart stopped.

“Daddy?”

She nodded.

“He came to our house.”

The room became silent.

“Emma…”

“When?”

She thought carefully.

“Before Daddy went away.”

I felt cold.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She looked confused.

“Because Daddy told me it was a secret.”

Alessandro picked up the drawing.

His expression changed.

Because he noticed something.

The figure Emma had drawn was wearing something.

A black watch.

The same detail she had mentioned before.

The scary man.

The man in the hallway.

The man connected to Vanessa.

The man who had been hiding behind everything.

Then Alessandro turned the drawing over.

There was writing on the back.

A message written in a child’s handwriting.

But the words were not Emma’s.

They were older.

They were Daniel’s.

“Clara, if you find this, trust Alessandro.”

A pause.

Then the final sentence.

“But do not trust the man wearing the black watch.”

Everyone looked at each other.

Because now they knew.

The enemy was not a stranger.

The enemy had been standing close to them the entire time.

And somewhere in the city…

Daniel Bennett was alive.

Watching.

May you like

Waiting.

Preparing to reveal the final truth.
