Chapter 3: The Woman Behind The Lie

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?”

Alessandro handed me the document.

I stared at the page.

My hands started shaking.

It was a report.

A private investigation report.

My name.

My address.

Emma’s daycare.

Daniel’s death.

Everything.

Someone had been watching us.

For months.

“Why?” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The question was not why someone investigated me.

The question was why Vanessa Cole cared about a housekeeper.

Vanessa looked away.

That was when I understood.

She had never seen me as a servant.

She had seen me as a threat.

But why?

I looked at Alessandro.

“Mr. Moretti…”

He interrupted.

“Alessandro.”

I looked at him.

For the first time in three years, he said my name like I was not invisible.

“Clara, tell me everything about Daniel.”

My throat tightened.

I looked at Emma.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit Daniel had bought before he died.

“My husband worked construction.”

Alessandro listened.

“He reported safety violations at a waterfront project.”

The room became quieter.

“Two weeks later, he died.”

Someone gasped.

“It was ruled an accident.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everything involving powerful people becomes an accident.”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

Because he understood that sentence.

More than anyone.

“Who owned the project?”

I hesitated.

Then answered.

“Moretti Development.”

The room exploded.

Whispers.

Shock.

Fear.

My knees almost failed.

Because I had never connected those things.

Daniel’s death.

This house.

This family.

Alessandro.

But now everyone was looking at me differently.

Like I was not just a witness.

I was a person carrying a secret that could destroy an empire.

Vanessa smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

Finally.

Finally she had found something.

“You see?” she said.

Everyone looked at her.

“She isn’t innocent.”

My blood went cold.

“She came here intentionally.”

“No,” I whispered.

“She wanted access to Alessandro.”

“That’s a lie.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Is it?”

She looked around.

“A poor widow suddenly gets hired into the home of the richest man in the city.”

Her eyes landed on Emma.

“And brings her daughter.”

The room became uncomfortable.

Because people love simple stories.

The villain.

The victim.

The innocent.

The guilty.

They did not want complicated truth.

Alessandro turned toward Vanessa.

“Stop.”

But she continued.

“She knew exactly who he was.”

Then she pointed at me.

“She has been planning this from the beginning.”

For the first time that night…

I saw Alessandro hesitate.

Not because he believed Vanessa.

Because he realized something terrifying.

There were too many secrets.

Too many people hiding things.

And he was standing in the center of all of them.

Then Emma spoke.

Quietly.

Almost too quietly.

“Mama…”

I looked down.

“What is it, baby?”

She pointed toward the hallway.

Toward the dark corridor leading away from the ballroom.

“There was another pillow.”

Everyone froze.

Alessandro looked at her.

“Another one?”

Emma nodded.

“Not Vanessa’s.”

She hugged her rabbit tighter.

“The scary man put it there.”

The room went silent.

A child’s words.

One sentence.

May you like

And suddenly the lie everyone thought they uncovered…

Was only the beginning.
