Chapter 11: The Return of Lucia Moretti

For fifteen years, the Moretti family had believed Lucia Moretti was buried beneath a marble headstone overlooking the ocean.

For fifteen years, Alessandro had visited that grave.

He had stood there alone.

He had spoken to a woman he thought was gone.

He had forgiven her for leaving too soon.

He had mourned her.

And now she was standing inside his home.

Alive.

The woman who had shaped his childhood.

The woman who had taught him how to survive.

The woman he had believed was taken from him.

Lucia Moretti stood at the end of the hallway wearing a dark coat, her silver hair perfectly arranged, her expression calm.

Too calm.

Everyone else in the mansion looked terrified.

But she looked like someone returning to a place that always belonged to her.

Her eyes moved through the room.

Past the guards.

Past Victor.

Past Vanessa.

Then finally stopped on Alessandro.

For a moment, mother and son simply looked at each other.

No one spoke.

Then Lucia smiled.

A small, almost gentle smile.

“Alessandro.”

His face did not move.

“Mother.”

The word sounded strange.

Like a name from another life.

The security team immediately surrounded her.

Lucia did not react.

She looked amused.

“Still dramatic, I see.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“You are supposed to be dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She tilted her head.

“Because it was necessary.”

The answer was so cold that even Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“You faked your own death.”

“Yes.”

“You let me bury you.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me believe I lost my mother.”

A pause.

Then Lucia said:

“I watched you become strong.”

Something broke inside Alessandro’s expression.

Not weakness.

Pain.

“You call that strength?”

Lucia looked at him.

“I call it survival.”

I stood behind Alessandro with Emma.

Lucia noticed her immediately.

And that frightened me.

Because her eyes did not show surprise.

They showed recognition.

“There she is.”

My body went cold.

Alessandro moved instantly between us.

“Do not look at her.”

Lucia smiled.

“Protective already?”

“She is a child.”

“She is an opportunity.”

The room froze.

Nobody expected her to say it.

Not even Vanessa.

“You admit it?”

Lucia walked slowly forward.

“She is the key.”

Alessandro’s voice became dangerous.

“To what?”

Lucia looked around the mansion.

“At everything your father built.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You destroyed everything he built.”

Lucia looked at him.

The old butler.

The man who had served her family for decades.

“You always were too loyal, Victor.”

“And you always were too cruel.”

A faint smile appeared on Lucia’s face.

“Perhaps.”

Alessandro’s fists tightened.

“Why?”

The question was simple.

But everyone knew it carried fifteen years of pain.

“Why did you do any of this?”

Lucia looked at her son.

And for the first time…

Her expression changed.

Almost human.

“Because your father was weak.”

The room went silent.

“He believed loyalty mattered more than power.”

She walked toward the window.

“He trusted people.”

Her voice became colder.

“That was his mistake.”

“My father loved you.”

Lucia stopped.

For a second.

Only a second.

Something passed across her face.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

“Love does not protect an empire.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“So you destroyed your own family?”

“I saved it.”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“You destroyed it.”

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“You said everything would work.”

Everyone turned.

Lucia looked at her.

“You said Alessandro would accept the baby.”

Silence.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“You promised me.”

Lucia looked almost disappointed.

“Did you really think I cared about you?”

Vanessa froze.

“You were useful.”

Those two words destroyed her.

Because Vanessa finally understood.

She had not been chosen.

She had been used.

Just like everyone else.

“You ruined my life.”

Lucia looked at her.

“No.”

She smiled.

“You ruined your own life when you agreed.”

Then Emma moved.

A tiny step.

Everyone noticed.

She looked at Lucia.

Not scared.

Confused.

Children did not understand power.

They only understood feelings.

“You’re the scary lady.”

The room went silent.

Lucia looked down.

“What did you say?”

Emma held my hand.

“The scary lady from the picture.”

Everyone froze.

Alessandro turned.

“What picture?”

Emma pointed toward Lucia.

“Mama had a picture.”

My heart stopped.

“I never had—”

Then I remembered.

Years ago.

After Daniel died.

Among his belongings.

A small photograph.

A woman I did not recognize.

A woman my father had circled in red.

I had forgotten.

Until now.

Lucia’s expression changed.

“Where did you see it?”

Emma looked at her.

“Daddy had it.”

Nobody moved.

Alessandro looked at me.

“Your husband?”

I nodded slowly.

“He kept a picture of her?”

“Yes.”

Lucia became silent.

For the first time since entering the mansion…

She looked uncertain.

Then Victor whispered:

“Impossible.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Victor looked at Lucia.

“Daniel Bennett.”

My stomach dropped.

“What about him?”

Victor’s face became pale.

“Daniel wasn’t just a construction worker.”

The room froze.

“He was investigating the same thing Thomas Hayes was investigating.”

I felt dizzy.

“No.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

My husband.

The man I thought was just trying to make a safer workplace.

The man whose death I had spent years grieving.

Had been involved in this war too.

Alessandro looked at me.

“Clara…”

But before he could finish, Lucia interrupted.

“Your husband knew too much.”

The words hit me.

I stared at her.

“You knew Daniel?”

Lucia said nothing.

That silence was enough.

“You killed him.”

The room became completely still.

Lucia did not deny it.

She simply looked at me.

And said:

“Your husband made the same mistake your father made.”

My hands started shaking.

“What mistake?”

Lucia’s eyes moved to Emma.

“He chose the truth over his own life.”

Suddenly, every screen in the mansion turned on.

The security monitors.

The televisions.

Every device.

A video appeared.

A woman sitting in darkness.

A woman everyone recognized.

Lucia.

But younger.

Recorded fifteen years ago.

Her own voice filled the mansion.

“If you are watching this, then something went wrong.”

Everyone stared.

Because Lucia had prepared this moment.

She continued:

“The Hayes child has been found.”

My heart stopped.

“She must never reach eighteen.”

Alessandro’s face changed.

The video continued.

“Because when she does…”

A pause.

The screen flickered.

Then Lucia’s younger voice said:

“She will become the most powerful person in America.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Alessandro looked at his mother.

And said the words that changed the entire war.

“You were never trying to control the empire.”

May you like

A pause.

“You were trying to destroy the heir.”
