Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

We found my mother in a small coastal town.
She didn't run.
She was sitting outside a café.
When she saw me, she began crying.
“Evan.”
I sat across from her.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me bury you.”
“I know.”
“You watched me mourn you.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
She looked toward Elise.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Richard?”
She shook her head.
“Of your father.”
I couldn't understand.
She explained that my father had discovered the conspiracy years earlier.
But he wasn't innocent.
He had helped build the financial network before trying to destroy it.
My mother had spent years protecting me from the consequences.
Elise had discovered the truth.
My mother believed she would expose everyone.
So she helped Richard make Elise disappear.
“But I never wanted her killed.”
Elise stared at her.
“You locked me underground.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“You kept me there for six years.”
My mother broke down.
“I know.”
I wanted to hate her.
Part of me did.
But the deeper truth was harder.
Everyone in my family had lied.
Everyone had convinced themselves their lies were protection.
And Perrin had paid the price.
My mother handed me an envelope.
“This is everything.”
Inside were contracts.
Bank records.
Names.
Judges.
Police officers.
Executives.
Politicians.
The conspiracy reached far beyond our family.
Then I saw one name.
The detective.
The man who had been helping us.
I looked up.
My mother whispered:
“He works for them.”
My phone rang.
It was the detective.
“Evan, you need to leave town immediately.”
I asked:
“Why?”
His voice changed.
“Because Richard just escaped custody.”
Then I heard another voice behind him.
Rhea.
May you like
Laughing.
