Chapter 14 - THE JUDGE RETURNS

Judge Kane returned voluntarily.
That terrified me more than his disappearance.
He walked into the courthouse wearing a dark suit.
No handcuffs.
No fear.
He looked directly at me.
Then he smiled.
“You have your father's stubbornness.”
I hated him instantly.
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
He adjusted his tie.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
The trial began.
Kane's lawyers attacked Elise's credibility.
They called her confused.
Traumatized.
Unreliable.
They claimed she had fabricated the kidnapping.
Then Kane's attorney played footage of Elise signing a document six years earlier.
The courtroom gasped.
Elise looked at me.
“I never signed that.”
The document stated she had voluntarily abandoned her family.
I knew it was fake.
But the jury didn't know.
Then Perrin asked to testify.
I refused.
He was eight.
He shouldn't have to carry this.
But he said:
“I want people to know my mom didn't leave me.”
The judge allowed it.
Perrin sat in the witness chair.
His feet didn't touch the floor.
The prosecutor asked:
“Perrin, did your mother abandon you?”
“No.”
“Who told you she was gone?”
“Rhea.”
“Did you believe her?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Perrin looked toward the jury.
“Because my mom told me something before they took her.”
“What?”
He smiled faintly.
“She said real love doesn't disappear.”
Elise covered her mouth.
The courtroom went silent.
Then Perrin added:
“She was right.”
That sentence changed everything.
The prosecutor introduced new evidence.
The hidden recordings.
The bank transfers.
The photographs.
The DNA evidence.
The original accident footage.
Kane's defense collapsed.
But Kane wasn't finished.
He looked at me.
Then he whispered:
“You still don't know why Elise was chosen.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He smiled.
“Ask your wife what she found before she disappeared.”
May you like
Elise looked terrified.
