Chapter 16 - THE FINAL TRAP

Kane claimed he knew where the original evidence was hidden.
Evidence that could clear Elise completely.
He offered a deal.
Elise would meet him alone.
I refused.
But Elise agreed.
“I have spent six years running.”
She looked at me.
“I won't run anymore.”
We arranged the meeting under federal surveillance.
Kane arrived at an old courthouse archive.
Elise entered.
I watched from another room.
Kane placed a folder on the table.
“Your original investigation.”
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed her.
Me.
Perrin.
And my father.
Taken before Perrin was born.
Kane said:
“Your father knew the conspiracy existed before you ever discovered it.”
Elise looked at him.
“Why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he was trying to destroy it from inside.”
Then Kane revealed the truth.
He had not created the conspiracy.
He had inherited it.
And my father had been trying to dismantle it.
Kane had eliminated everyone who knew.
Except Elise.
Except me.
Except Perrin.
Suddenly the lights went out.
The surveillance cameras died.
Kane grabbed Elise.
I rushed inside.
A gunshot rang out.
Kane fell.
But he wasn't shot by me.
Rhea stood behind him.
She had escaped custody.
She looked at Elise.
“I owe you my life.”
Federal agents stormed the room.
Rhea dropped her weapon.
Kane was alive.
Elise was safe.
And the evidence was finally recovered.
For the first time, there was nowhere left for them to hide.
The trial ended three months later.
Kane was sentenced to life.
Rhea received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
My mother went to prison.
Richard died awaiting appeal.
Daniel disappeared into witness protection.
And our family began the long process of healing.
But healing wasn't simple.
Perrin still hated locked doors.
Elise still woke screaming.
I still checked every room before going to bed.
Yet we were together.
May you like
That mattered.
