Chapter 18 - THE LAST LETTER

Five years passed.

Perrin was thirteen.

Elise and I renewed our vows.

This time, there were no lies.

No hidden agendas.

No secret guests.

Just family.

After the ceremony, Perrin handed me an envelope.

“Grandpa left it for you.”

I stared at him.

“My father?”

He nodded.

“I found it in the foundation archives.”

I opened it.

My father's handwriting filled the page.

“Evan,

If you're reading this, then you survived what I couldn't prevent.

I'm sorry.

I thought power could protect our family.

I was wrong.

Power only attracts people who want to control it.

The only thing stronger is the choice to walk away.

You may hate me.

You have every right.

But please remember this:

When I looked at you, I saw the son I failed to protect.

When I looked at Perrin, I saw the future I wanted you to save.

Choose them.

Every time.

Even when it costs you everything.”

I folded the letter.

Elise placed her hand over mine.

Perrin looked at us.

“What did he say?”

I smiled.

“He told me to be a better father.”

Perrin laughed.

“You already are.”

I looked at my son.

The boy who had once been trapped behind a wall.

The boy who had survived fear without losing his ability to love.

He wasn't the heir of an empire anymore.

He was just my son.

And that was more than enough.

That night, we walked along the beach.

The moon reflected across the water.

Perrin ran ahead.

Elise leaned against me.

“Do you ever think about what would have happened if you hadn't come home that day?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“What do you think?”

I watched Perrin laughing in the distance.

“I think I was given one chance to hear him.”

“And you did.”

I took her hand.

May you like

“I'll always hear him.”
