Chapter 19 - THE WALL COMES DOWN

Years later, we returned to the old house.
It had been restored.
But I didn't want it.
We were there for one reason.
To remove the wall.
Perrin, now seventeen, stood beside me.
Elise watched from the hallway.
I took a hammer.
Perrin smiled.
“Want me to do it?”
I handed it to him.
He struck the wood.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
The concealed panel cracked.
We removed it completely.
Behind it was the narrow room where I had found him.
The walls were still stained.
The floor still carried old scratches.
Perrin stared silently.
Then he stepped inside.
I worried he would break.
Instead, he touched the wall.
“This is where my life changed.”
Elise stood beside him.
“You were very brave.”
“I wasn't.”
“You were.”
Perrin looked at me.
“I just wanted Dad.”
My eyes burned.
“I was coming.”
“But you were late.”
I nodded.
“I was.”
He hugged me.
“I forgive you.”
Those three words broke something inside me.
I had spent years blaming myself.
For leaving.
For trusting Rhea.
For believing Elise was dead.
For not seeing the signs.
But forgiveness didn't erase the past.
It simply stopped the past from owning the future.
We tore the wall down completely.
Then we carried the wood outside.
Perrin lit a small fire.
The old boards burned slowly.
Elise watched the flames.
“Goodbye,” she whispered.
I knew she wasn't saying goodbye to the wall.
She was saying goodbye to the woman she had been before six years of captivity.
I put my arm around her.
Perrin stood between us.
The three of us watched the last piece collapse into ash.
There was no hidden door anymore.
No secret room.
May you like
No place left for fear to hide.
