Chapter 11 - THE LAST SAFE ROOM

Richard demanded the documents.
I refused.
He told his men to take Perrin.
Elise fought.
I fought harder.
The chaos gave us three seconds.
Three seconds were enough.
We ran into the basement.
I remembered my father's letter.
“The truth was the inheritance.”
I found the old safe room.
The door closed behind us.
Richard's men hammered against it.
Perrin was crying.
Elise held him.
I searched the walls.
There had to be something.
Then I saw a small brass plate.
I pressed it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a laptop.
My father's final archive.
I turned it on.
Thousands of files appeared.
Bank transfers.
Audio recordings.
Videos.
Everything.
But there was one file labeled:
ELISE — ORIGINAL ACCIDENT REPORT.
I opened it.
The video showed the night of the crash.
Elise's car had not gone over the bridge.
A truck had forced it off the road.
Men dragged her from the wreck.
One of them removed his mask.
It was Richard.
Another man stood beside him.
My mother.
But the third man…
I recognized him.
My own business partner.
Daniel.
The man who had been managing my company while I traveled.
The man I had trusted completely.
I stared at the screen.
Then the basement door exploded inward.
Richard stepped through.
“Enough.”
I closed the laptop.
He pointed his gun.
“Give it to me.”
I smiled.
“You already lost.”
He frowned.
“My entire company received a copy thirty minutes ago.”
He froze.
I had lied.
But he believed me.
Then sirens filled the street.
Real police.
Federal agents.
Journalists.
My father had built one final safeguard.
The files had been scheduled for release.
Richard's face changed.
May you like
For the first time, he looked afraid.
