Chapter 8 - THE PETITION AGAINST ME

The petition described me as paranoid, impulsive, and increasingly hostile.

It claimed I disguised myself because of a delusional belief that Vanessa was plotting against the family.

It described the bucket incident as self-defense.

According to the document, I had threatened Vanessa with a cleaning tool.

I had not been holding one.

A physician named Dr. Paul Mercer had signed a declaration stating that I showed symptoms of cognitive decline.

I had never met him.

The petition requested temporary control of the Whitmore Foundation.

Not for Daniel.

For Daniel and his future spouse.

Vanessa had prepared the filing before the test.

The document was dated four days earlier.

Daniel read it in the foyer.

His hands began shaking.

“You planned to declare my mother incompetent before yesterday.”

Vanessa’s attorney stepped forward.

“My client became concerned after several unusual incidents.”

“What incidents?”

“Mrs. Whitmore questioning staff about Vanessa.”

“Reviewing the foundation grant.”

“Disguising herself inside the home.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You already knew she was investigating the charity.”

Vanessa said nothing.

He turned another page.

The petition referenced a scheduled marriage date two weeks earlier than the public wedding.

A private legal ceremony had been arranged.

Vanessa planned to become Daniel’s wife before seeking control of the foundation.

“You wanted me to sign the marriage certificate Friday,” Daniel said.

“You said it was for insurance paperwork.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“We were getting married anyway.”

“That does not answer the question.”

She stepped toward him.

“Your mother will never let you become an adult while she controls the money.”

Daniel looked at the woman who had faked a pregnancy, forged his signature, and prepared to strip his mother of legal authority.

Then he held out the engagement ring.

“We are done.”

Vanessa stared at it.

“You do not mean that.”

“I do.”

“You will regret humiliating me.”

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“You threw dirty water over a woman you believed was powerless.”

“You used an imaginary child to control me.”

“You signed my name to a fraudulent charity.”

“You filed papers against my mother before the engagement ended.”

“The humiliation belongs to you.”

Vanessa did not take the ring.

Daniel placed it on the foyer table.

Her attorney whispered that they should leave.

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked directly at me.

“You think you won.”

“No.”

“My son lost the woman he loved.”

“My staff learned their safety depended on a secret test.”

“My family discovered how little trust remained inside this house.”

“No one won.”

May you like

Vanessa smiled coldly.

“Then you have no idea what comes next.”
