Chapter 15 - THE SENTENCES

Adrian received seven years in federal prison.
His cooperation reduced what could have been a much longer sentence.
Charles received home confinement, financial restrictions, and permanent removal from charitable management.
The court considered his age.
It did not accept his family name as a defense.
Vanessa received nine years.
During sentencing, she asked to address Daniel.
The judge allowed it.
“I loved you,” she said.
Daniel believed her.
I could see it in his face.
She continued.
“I was afraid your mother would always see me as poor.”
“I thought money would make me impossible to humiliate.”
Daniel answered quietly.
“My mother did humiliate you with the test.”
“I am sorry for that.”
Vanessa looked surprised.
Then he continued.
“But fear did not make you throw the bucket.”
“Fear did not forge my signature.”
“Fear did not make you invent our child.”
“You made those choices.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Will you wait for me?”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
“No.”
The answer broke something inside both of them.
Vanessa looked toward me.
“You got what you wanted.”
I shook my head.
“My son lost years of trust.”
“My staff learned that I needed a disguise before fully believing them.”
“The foundation nearly lost twelve million dollars.”
“This is not what I wanted.”
The officers led her away.
Daniel remained seated until the courtroom emptied.
I sat beside him.
