Chapter 7 - THE LIE THAT USED AN UNBORN CHILD

I did not call Daniel.
I gave the receipt to Claire Donovan.
She verified the seller.
Then she sent the information to Daniel directly.
He arrived at the mansion after midnight.
Vanessa was not with him.
His face looked empty.
“She admitted it.”
I said nothing.
“She said she was afraid I would leave after the recording.”
“So she invented a pregnancy.”
“Yes.”
“She planned to claim a miscarriage after we reconciled.”
Daniel sat at the kitchen table.
Rosa quietly placed coffee before him and left.
He stared at the cup.
“I spent the afternoon grieving a child who never existed.”
I sat across from him.
“I am sorry.”
“Do not say you warned me.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“She cried in my arms.”
“She told me the stress from your test caused the bleeding.”
His voice became sharper.
“She made me blame you.”
I reached across the table.
He did not take my hand.
“I loved her,” he said.
“I know.”
“No.”
“You do not understand.”
“I knew she could be difficult.”
“I knew she cared too much about appearances.”
“But she made me feel chosen.”
“After Dad died, everyone looked at me like I might break.”
“She did not.”
“She looked at me like I could give her a future.”
The sentence revealed the wound beneath their relationship.
Vanessa had not only desired money.
She had made Daniel’s usefulness feel like love.
“Your value is not the future you can purchase for someone,” I said.
He laughed without humor.
“That is easy for a woman with hundreds of millions to say.”
He was right again.
Money had distorted every conversation in our family.
I had tried to protect Daniel from greed by controlling access.
Vanessa had treated him as a gate.
Daniel had spent years wondering whether anyone wanted him without the Whitmore name.
He looked at the kitchen door.
“Where is she?”
“Her apartment.”
“She texted me fifty-seven times.”
“Have you responded?”
“No.”
“What will you do?”
He removed the engagement ring from his pocket.
“She is coming tomorrow to collect her belongings.”
“I will end it then.”
The following morning, Vanessa arrived with her attorney.

She did not come to collect clothing.
She came carrying an emergency petition declaring me mentally incompetent.
