Chapter 10 - THE PERSON INSIDE THE HOUSE

Only six people knew the archive code.

Daniel.

Rosa.

Claire.

My security director, Thomas Reed.

My late husband’s brother, Charles Whitmore.

And me.

The access log showed the code had been tested twice during the previous month.

Both attempts occurred while Charles visited.

Charles was seventy-one.

He had spent his career resenting that my husband selected me to lead the foundation after his death.

He believed the Whitmore name should pass through men.

When Daniel refused to challenge my authority, Charles called him weak.

I invited Charles to the library.

He arrived with his usual silver cane and perfect navy suit.

“Vanessa tells me you humiliated her,” he said.

“She tells many stories.”

“You drove Daniel’s fiancée away.”

“Did you give her the archive code?”

His expression remained calm.

“No.”

“The security system recorded your phone near the panel.”

“I was making a call.”

“Did you support the competency petition?”

He looked toward the portrait of his brother.

“I supported a transfer of leadership.”

“You are seventy-one.”

“You want me declared too old so you can take control at seventy-one?”

“You are emotional.”

“You built a trap inside your own house.”

“You have embarrassed the family.”

“The family name appears nowhere in your concern for the workers Vanessa abused.”

Charles struck his cane against the floor.

“Staff come and go.”

“The foundation must survive.”

There it was.

The same belief Vanessa held.

People were temporary.

Money was permanent.

I placed Adrian’s account records before him.

“You partnered with Tomorrow’s Promise.”

Charles glanced at the pages.

“The foundation needs younger leadership.”

“Younger leadership with a yacht?”

“Do not become childish.”

I stood.

“Did you give Vanessa the code?”

Charles remained silent.

The answer came from the doorway.

Daniel entered holding a printed message.

“Uncle Charles sent it to her.”

The message read:

Once Eleanor is removed, Daniel can be guided.

If he resists, the marriage contract gives Vanessa control of his voting rights.

Daniel looked at his uncle.

“You planned to control me too.”

Charles did not deny it.

“You have never been prepared to lead.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You never allowed me to learn.”

“You called every question weakness.”

“You praised obedience when it benefited you.”

Charles turned toward me.

“This is what your parenting created.”

I looked at Daniel.

“No.”

“This is what our secrecy allowed.”

Before security could escort Charles out, the mansion lights went dark.

The archive alarm began sounding beneath the west wing.

Someone had entered the vault.
