Chapter 16 - THE APOLOGY TO THE STAFF
Daniel asked every member of the household staff to meet in the main dining room.
No one wore formal uniforms.
That was his request.
Rosa sat near the window.
Luis remained beside Clara.
Daniel stood at the head of the table.
“I owe all of you an apology.”
No one interrupted.
“You told me Vanessa mistreated you.”
“I minimized it.”
“I called cruelty stress because accepting the truth would have changed my plans.”
“I made your safety depend on whether I was ready to be disappointed.”
Rosa looked toward him.
“What changes now?”
Daniel placed a new employment policy on the table.
Every complaint involving a family member would be reviewed by an independent workplace officer.
No Whitmore relative could fire household staff directly.
Security recordings could not be disabled by guests.
Staff would receive written contracts, retirement contributions, and access to legal advice.
Daniel continued.
“I do not expect policy to repair trust.”
“But trust should not be the only thing protecting you.”
Luis nodded slowly.
“That is a good beginning.”
Then I stood.
“I owe you an apology too.”
Rosa looked at me.
“I listened when you spoke.”
“But I did not act decisively until I saw Vanessa’s behavior myself.”
“I gave greater weight to what happened to me than what had already happened to you.”
“That was wrong.”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“You believed us eventually.”
“Eventually was late.”
Rosa reached across the table.
“Late can still matter when someone admits it was late.”
After the meeting, I retired the formal housekeeper uniform.
Employees selected comfortable professional clothing themselves.
The secondhand uniform I had worn during the test was placed inside a sealed box.
