Chapter 14 - THE COURTROOM RECORDING

Vanessa’s trial began eight months later.
Adrian accepted a plea agreement and testified against her.
He claimed she created the original plan.
Vanessa claimed Adrian controlled her.
Their loyalty ended the moment prison sentences became real.
The prosecution played the hidden recording.
The jury heard Vanessa mock my accent.
They heard her accuse me of stealing the bracelet she had hidden.
They heard her say,
“People like you should be grateful people like me let you indoors.”
They heard the bucket strike my body.
Then the prosecution presented the false pregnancy tests.
The competency petition.
The forged grant.
The vault footage.
Vanessa’s attorney attempted to describe the housekeeper test as psychological abuse.
I testified honestly.
“I deceived her about my identity.”
“I recorded her without announcing it.”
“I used my employees’ work clothes as a costume.”
“I regret those choices.”
The attorney looked surprised.
“Then you admit my client was provoked.”
“No.”
“I admit my own conduct without using it to erase hers.”
The attorney approached.
“You wanted Vanessa to fail.”
“I wanted to know who she became around someone she believed had no power.”
“You could have treated her coldly.”
“I asked where she wanted garment boxes.”
“I found the bracelet she hid.”
“I refused to scrub a muddy footprint with my bare hands.”
“If those actions provoked cruelty, the cruelty was already present.”
Rosa testified.
Luis testified.
Clara testified.
Daniel took the stand last.
Vanessa watched him with tears in her eyes.
“Did you love the defendant?” the prosecutor asked.
“Yes.”
“Do you still?”
Daniel paused.
“Part of me loves the person I believed she was.”
“Is that person real?”
“I do not know.”
Vanessa’s attorney asked whether my interference destroyed the engagement.
Daniel looked toward me.
“My mother’s test exposed the truth.”
“It also damaged my trust in her.”
“Both things are real.”
The jury found Vanessa guilty of conspiracy, fraud, attempted financial exploitation, false filings, and evidence destruction.
The assault charge resulted in a separate conviction.

Vanessa closed her eyes.
For once, there was no camera recording the expression for her.
