Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN DANIEL BECAME READY TO MEET

Three years passed.
Daniel did not rush into another relationship.
He attended therapy.
He learned how quickly he confused being needed with being loved.
He learned that protecting people did not require ignoring what they did.
He learned to hear criticism without assuming it was rejection.
Then he met Maya Reynolds.
She was an architect working on one of the foundation’s community centers.
Maya wore practical shoes, asked difficult questions, and refused to let Daniel approve design changes without reading the costs.
The first time she visited my house, she thanked Rosa for lunch.
Then she carried her own plate into the kitchen.
I noticed.
I did not turn it into a test.
Months later, Daniel told Maya the entire story.
The disguise.
The bucket.
The recording.
The forged grant.
The false pregnancy.
He also told her about my apology and his anger toward me.
Maya listened.
Then she said,
“Your family seems exhausting.”
Daniel laughed.
“Yes.”
She did not promise to heal him.
He did not ask her to.
When they became engaged two years later, Daniel came to the mansion alone.
“I am not asking you to test her.”
“Good.”
“I am asking whether you trust me to make the decision.”
I looked at the man standing before me.
He was no longer the son who needed my approval.
He was not rejecting my concern either.
“Yes,” I said.
“I trust you.”
“Completely?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“That is more honest.”
The wedding was held in the foundation garden.
Rosa attended as a guest.
So did Luis and Clara.

No one worked during the ceremony.
A professional event company handled every detail under contracts Daniel had personally reviewed.
