Chapter 9 - ARTHUR’S PROMISE
Arthur read the promise inside the library.
His hands shook so badly that Claire had to hold the page steady.
“You signed this.”
“Yes.”
“My grandfather trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“You handed my mother to Margaret.”
Arthur covered his face.
“I thought I could control what happened.”
“You did not try.”
“I tried after.”
“When?”
“Years later.”
“After I grew up without a mother?”
His voice broke.
“I sent money to your foster family.”
Claire stared at him.
“I was not in foster care.”
Arthur looked up.
Margaret had told him Claire was placed with distant relatives.
In reality, Claire had been raised by her father’s elderly sister.
The money Arthur sent went into an account controlled by Margaret.
Even his secret attempts at guilt had been redirected into her system.
“Why did you stay?” Claire asked.
Arthur looked around the library.
“The house.”
“The company.”
“My sons.”
“My name.”
Each answer sounded smaller than the last.
“You chose all of them over people.”
“Yes.”
Claire expected denial.
Excuses.
Perhaps blame.
Arthur gave none.
“I told myself Margaret was too powerful.”
“But I helped make her powerful every time I remained silent.”
Evelyn entered the room.
She moved slowly with a cane.
Arthur stood.
He could not meet her eyes.
“I am sorry.”
Evelyn looked at the promise.
“You held Claire when she was born.”
Arthur nodded.
“You told my father she would always be safe in this house.”
“I remember.”
“You watched them take me beneath the greenhouse.”
Arthur began crying.
“I remember.”
Evelyn’s expression did not soften.
“Then remember it in court.”
He looked at her.
“You want me to testify.”
“I want you to do one useful thing with the years you have left.”
Arthur agreed.
His testimony connected Margaret to the clinics.
He identified doctors.
Attorneys.
And board members.
He also admitted signing documents used to declare Evelyn dead.
The confession exposed him to criminal charges.
He accepted that.
Margaret learned about his cooperation from jail.
She sent a message through her attorney.
Arthur will not survive long enough to testify.
Agent Ruiz moved him into federal protection.
The mansion was sealed.
Claire and Evelyn relocated to a secure apartment.
That night, Arthur disappeared from the safe house.
Security footage showed him leaving willingly with a woman wearing a nurse’s uniform.
The woman’s face was hidden.

It had belonged to Margaret.
