Chapter 8 - THE NINE NAMES

Rosa’s hospital room was guarded by two federal officers.
Her shoulder was bandaged.
Her voice remained weak.
Claire sat beside her with Evelyn.
The two older women looked at each other for a long time.
Rosa reached for Evelyn’s hand.
“I thought I failed you.”
“You came back.”
“Too late.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked toward Claire.
“You came back in time for her.”
Rosa gave Agent Ruiz a list of nine names.
Every woman had challenged the Whitmore family over money, ownership, or medical decisions.
Two were business partners.
One was a journalist.
Three were former employees.
Another was Arthur’s sister.
The final two were unknown to Claire.
Rosa explained that Margaret used private clinics, false psychiatric reports, and forged death certificates.
Some women were released after signing away claims.
Others disappeared permanently.
“Did Arthur know?” Claire asked.
Rosa looked toward the door.
“He knew enough.”
That answer followed Arthur everywhere.
He knew enough to stop it.
Enough to call police.
Enough to warn families.
Enough to refuse signatures.
But never enough to risk himself.
Agent Ruiz located four surviving women within forty-eight hours.
Two had lived under false names for decades.
One remained inside a long-term psychiatric facility.
The fourth had died only months earlier.
Her daughter agreed to provide records.
The investigation expanded beyond the mansion.
Banks froze Whitmore accounts.
The company’s board called an emergency meeting.
Adrian remained chief executive.
Margaret’s voting shares were suspended.
Nicholas’s shares were placed under court control.
Claire’s family claim, once ignored, suddenly mattered.
Original deeds showed her grandfather owned forty percent of the mansion and thirty percent of Whitmore Shipping.
Evelyn inherited those rights.
Because she was alive, every transfer made after her false death could be voided.
Adrian called Claire through his attorney.
He requested a meeting.
She refused twice.
The third request contained one sentence.
I know where Arthur hid your grandfather’s final will.
Claire agreed to meet inside Agent Ruiz’s office.
Adrian looked exhausted.
The bruise beneath his eye came from the struggle with Nicholas.
He placed an old key on the table.
“My father kept this inside his desk.”
“What does it open?”
“A safe at Whitmore Shipping.”
“Why tell me?”
“Because my mother will destroy it if she regains access.”
“You are still protecting the company.”
“I am trying to protect the truth.”
Claire looked at him.
“You threw a plate at me.”
“I know.”
“You helped your mother forge documents.”
“I know.”
“You planned to leave after taking whatever I inherited.”
His voice dropped.
“Yes.”
“Then do not ask me to believe one helpful act changes who you are.”
“I am not asking.”
Adrian pushed the key toward Agent Ruiz.
“I am giving evidence.”
The safe was opened that evening.
Inside was the will.
There was also a letter from Claire’s grandfather.
It named Arthur Whitmore as temporary protector of Evelyn and Claire.
May you like
Arthur had signed beneath one promise.
I will defend them as my own family.
