Chapter 16 - THE VOICE OF HER GRANDFATHER
The recording began with static.
Then Samuel Bennett’s voice filled the library.
Claire had never heard him before.
He died when she was an infant.
“My dear Claire.”
“If you hear this, then Evelyn found a way to survive.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The voice continued.
“I entered business with Arthur Whitmore because I believed friendship could be stronger than greed.”
“I was wrong.”
“Margaret discovered the shipping routes were being used for more than legal cargo.”
“She found the criminal network before I did.”
Claire looked at Agent Ruiz.
“Criminal network?”
The recording explained that certain Whitmore ships transported people under false identities.
Political refugees.
Witnesses.
Children moved through illegal adoptions.
Samuel attempted to close the routes.
Margaret saw another opportunity.
She sold access to wealthy clients who wanted people hidden.
The private clinics were only one part.
Samuel gathered evidence.
Before he could release it, his car exploded.
His death was ruled accidental.
Claire looked at Evelyn.
“You knew he was murdered.”
“I suspected.”
“Why did you not tell me?”
“I had no proof.”
The recording continued.
“Arthur knows where the original shipping manifest is hidden.”
“If he refuses to produce it, the key is inside the dining room wall.”
Everyone turned toward the pale mark where Adrian’s plate had struck.
The damaged panel had already been removed during the first search.
But investigators had found only Samuel’s phone.
Rosa examined the wall again.
Behind the plaster was a second compartment.
Inside lay a metal cylinder.
The original shipping manifest listed hundreds of names.
Some were identified as witnesses relocated illegally.
Others were children.
Dates extended far beyond Evelyn’s confinement.
The most recent entry was only four years old.
Margaret’s network had continued through Nicholas and Helen.
Adrian’s company had unknowingly transported sealed containers connected to it.
Or perhaps not unknowingly.
Agent Ruiz reopened several cases.
Families were contacted.
International investigators joined.
The mansion secret became a national scandal.
Then Claire saw one familiar surname in the manifest.
PRICE.
Samuel Price’s family had been transported through the network.
He had not chosen Claire at random.
Margaret held information about his missing sister.
That was how she controlled him.
The final page contained the name of the official who authorized every protected route.
The signature belonged to Agent Lena Ruiz’s former supervisor.
Claire looked at her.
Ruiz’s expression hardened.
“I wondered how Margaret stayed ahead of us.”
The conspiracy reached inside federal law enforcement.
The supervisor disappeared before agents could arrest him.
He left one message behind.
The Bennett woman should ask why her father changed his name.
Claire stared at the note.
“My father died when I was seven.”
Evelyn looked away.
Claire saw it.
“What are you not telling me?”
