Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The mansion became silent after the doors locked.

Even the grandfather clock stopped ticking.

Adrian walked toward the security panel.

The screen displayed one message.

INTERNAL OVERRIDE ACTIVE.

He entered a code.

The system rejected it.

He tried again.

Nothing happened.

Claire remained near the dining table with her phone against her ear.

Agent Ruiz instructed her to stay where she could be seen through the windows.

Claire looked toward the heavy curtains.

Someone had already closed them.

She had not noticed when.

“Who has access to the security system?” she asked.

Adrian ignored her.

Margaret answered.

“Family members.”

“Which family members?”

“All of us.”

Arthur spoke from the doorway.

“And Rosa.”

Margaret turned sharply.

“Rosa left this house years ago.”

Arthur looked at his wife.

“That is what you told everyone.”

Claire remembered the name.

Rosa Delgado had been the Whitmore family’s housekeeper when Claire was a child.

She had also been the final person to see Claire’s mother, Evelyn Bennett, alive.

The police report claimed Rosa returned to Mexico shortly after Evelyn disappeared.

No travel record ever confirmed it.

Claire had found Rosa’s photograph in the hidden room.

Rosa stood beside Evelyn near the mansion greenhouse.

Both women were smiling.

On the back, someone had written one sentence.

If one of us disappears, the other tells Claire.

Claire had been three years old when the photograph was taken.

She looked at Arthur.

“Where did Rosa go?”

He rubbed both hands together.

“I do not know.”

Margaret gave a quiet laugh.

“Arthur has become confused in his old age.”

“I am not confused.”

His voice was weak.

But it did not break.

“I saw Rosa the night Evelyn disappeared.”

Adrian turned.

“You told the police you were in Chicago.”

“I lied.”

Margaret stepped toward him.

“Be careful.”

Arthur looked at Claire.

“I heard your mother arguing with Margaret in the library.”

“She said she had found the original ownership records.”

“What ownership records?”

“The documents proving the Whitmores never owned this mansion alone.”

Margaret’s expression became colder.

Arthur continued.

“Your grandfather paid for half the property.”

“He also financed the company that made our family rich.”

“After he died, Margaret removed his name.”

Claire felt the room shift around her.

“My mother knew.”

“Yes.”

“She planned to expose us.”

Adrian struck the security panel with his palm.

“This is ridiculous.”

“My grandfather built everything.”

Arthur looked at him.

“No.”

“Claire’s family built half.”

A noise came from the hallway.

Slow footsteps.

Then the scrape of metal against wood.

Margaret turned toward the sound.

“Who is there?”

Nobody answered.

The dining room lights flickered.

A woman’s voice came through the mansion speakers.

“I waited twenty-two years to hear Arthur tell the truth.”

Claire stopped breathing.

May you like

She recognized the voice from an old cassette recording.

The voice belonged to Rosa Delgado.
