Chapter 13 - EVELYN’S PAYMENT
Evelyn remembered the account after seeing Arthur’s signature.
She sat inside the mansion library with Claire, Rosa, and Agent Ruiz.
“I paid him to protect Claire.”
Arthur had agreed to move Claire to safety if Margaret acted.
The money came from Evelyn’s private inheritance.
But Arthur never moved Claire.
Margaret discovered the transfer.
She threatened to expose Arthur for accepting money from a business partner.
Arthur returned most of it.
The remainder stayed inside the account.
He spent twenty-two years hiding it.
Claire looked at him.
“You could have used that money to find us.”
“Yes.”
“You did not.”
“No.”
Arthur’s honesty had become painful in a new way.
He no longer lied.
But every truth revealed another failure.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Why did you accept the money?”
“I thought I could help.”
“Why did you stop?”
“I was afraid of losing Adrian and Nicholas.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“You chose your sons.”
“I did.”
“And then you taught them to choose themselves.”
Arthur began crying.
No one comforted him.
The money was transferred into the restitution fund.
Arthur signed a full waiver of any claim.
His health declined.
He moved into assisted care.
Claire visited once a month.
Not because she forgave him.
Because she wanted to understand how ordinary cowardice became a structure that trapped generations.
Margaret’s trial began that fall.
The prosecution presented financial records.
Clinic files.
Video tapes.
Witness testimony.
Nine women or their surviving families took the stand.
Evelyn testified behind a protective screen.
Margaret’s attorney described her memories as unreliable.
Evelyn answered calmly.
“They made my memory unreliable.”
“That was part of the crime.”
Rosa testified for two days.
Arthur’s recorded statement played for the jury.
Nicholas testified against his mother.
Helen refused.
Adrian entered the courtroom in a dark suit without a tie.
He had accepted a plea agreement.
In exchange for truthful testimony, prosecutors reduced several charges.
Claire watched him swear to tell the truth.
The prosecutor asked whether Margaret taught him to obtain Claire’s signature through fear.
“Yes.”
“Did you understand that Claire’s property would become easier to control if she were declared mentally unstable?”
“Yes.”
“Did you intend for her to be physically harmed?”
“No.”
“Did you care enough to ask what your mother planned?”
Adrian looked toward Claire.
“No.”
Margaret’s face changed.
Her older son had finally named the thing she relied on most.
