Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER BEHIND THE GLASS

Claire could not move.
For twenty-two years, she had imagined her mother in a hundred different ways.
Dead beside a road.
Living under another name.
Trapped in a hospital.
Choosing not to return.
She had never imagined seeing her standing inside the greenhouse.
Evelyn’s hands trembled against the glass.
“Claire.”
The voice was weaker than the one on the old tapes.
But it was hers.
Claire opened the doors.
Her mother stepped forward.
They stopped inches apart.
Neither knew where to begin.
Then Evelyn touched the cut on Claire’s cheek.
“Did Adrian do this?”
Claire nodded.
Evelyn looked toward him.
Adrian lowered his eyes.
Claire wrapped both arms around her mother.
Evelyn felt frighteningly light.
She smelled like antiseptic and rain.
Rosa watched from a stretcher as paramedics moved her through the hallway.
She smiled.
“You found her.”
Claire held her mother tighter.
“How did you get here?”
“A nurse helped me escape.”
“From where?”
“A clinic in Maryland.”
“Who kept you there?”
Evelyn looked toward Margaret.
“She paid the doctors.”
Margaret had been stopped by police near the greenhouse entrance.
Her wrists were already restrained.
She stared at Evelyn with open hatred.
“You should have stayed hidden.”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
For years, she had been treated as weak.
Medicated.
Moved.
Declared confused.
But when she looked at Margaret, something strong returned.
“You failed.”
Margaret laughed.
“You have no legal identity.”
“You were declared dead.”
“Your signatures belong to me.”
Agent Ruiz entered the greenhouse.
She was a tall woman with short dark hair and a federal badge.
“Not anymore.”
She had spent six months tracing payments from Whitmore accounts to private clinics.
Claire had contacted her after discovering a letter hidden inside Arthur’s desk.
That letter contained Evelyn’s patient number.
The plate Adrian threw had changed the timing.
But not the investigation.
Agent Ruiz ordered the greenhouse sealed.
Evelyn pointed toward an old stone planter.
“Beneath that.”
Officers moved it.
A rusted metal hatch appeared in the floor.
Arthur closed his eyes.
“The tunnel.”
Claire looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew the greenhouse had a cellar.”
“I did not know what Margaret stored there.”
Margaret smiled.
“He always knows just enough to claim innocence.”
The hatch opened.
A narrow ladder descended into darkness.
Agent Ruiz went first.
Claire followed despite the pain in her ribs.
The underground room contained shelves of original deeds.
Corporate ledgers.
Medical files.
And video tapes.
One wall held photographs of women.
All were connected to former Whitmore business partners.
Some were listed as dead.
Others had disappeared.
Evelyn touched one photograph.
“She was not the first.”
Claire turned toward Margaret above the hatch.
“This was larger than my mother.”
Agent Ruiz opened a ledger.
Payments stretched across thirty years.
Judges.
Doctors.
Police officers.
Private investigators.

The final page contained Adrian’s name.
Beside it was a payment made three days earlier.
