Chapter 7 - THE PLAN FOR CLAIRE

Samuel survived.
He had been struck on the head less than an hour earlier.
When he woke, he claimed Nicholas attacked him.
His story changed twice during the first interview.
Then Agent Ruiz showed him the financial records.
Samuel began talking.
Margaret hired him to monitor Claire.
The original plan was simple.
If Claire signed the inheritance transfer, nothing would happen.
If she refused, Samuel would drug her after dinner.
He would drive her to a private airfield.
A plane would take her to the same Maryland clinic where Evelyn had been held.
Doctors there would declare Claire mentally unstable.
Adrian would become her legal guardian.
Her financial claims would pass under his control.
“What about the divorce papers?” Claire asked.
Samuel looked confused.
“What divorce papers?”
Claire turned toward Adrian.
He looked away.
He had prepared them without telling Margaret.
He intended to leave Claire after obtaining control of any inheritance.
The revelation did not surprise her.
It only completed the picture.
Margaret wanted Claire contained.
Adrian wanted Claire emptied.
Neither saw her as a person.
Samuel continued.
Nicholas discovered the plan and demanded more money.
He believed Margaret intended to leave the company to Adrian.
Nicholas planned to kidnap Claire first.
He wanted to force her to sign the mansion shares directly to him.
“That is why he hid in the house,” Agent Ruiz said.
Samuel nodded.
“But why attack you?” Claire asked.
“He thought I had switched sides.”
“Had you?”
Samuel looked toward the floor.
“Rosa found me.”
“She showed me what happened to Evelyn.”
“I told her about the airfield.”
Rosa had spent years inside the hidden service wing collecting evidence.
She had activated the lockdown to prevent Margaret from moving Claire.
Nicholas attacked Samuel before Samuel could warn them.
Every person inside the mansion had entered the dining room carrying a different plan.
Adrian wanted a signature.
Margaret wanted control.
Nicholas wanted the company.
Rosa wanted the truth exposed.
Arthur wanted to survive another night without choosing.
Only Claire had made the call that ended the silence.
The next morning, prosecutors charged Margaret with kidnapping, fraud, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy.
Nicholas faced attempted murder and kidnapping charges.
Samuel entered protective custody.
Adrian was released pending investigation.
The plate assault remained a separate criminal matter.
Claire obtained an emergency protective order.
Adrian was forbidden from contacting her.
He stood outside the courthouse as she left.
Reporters crowded the steps.
He did not call her name.
He only watched.
Claire entered the car beside Evelyn.
Her mother held her hand.
For the first time in Claire’s life, she knew where she came from.
Then Agent Ruiz called.
Rosa had awakened after surgery.
She asked to see Claire immediately.
“She remembers where Margaret moved the other women,” Ruiz said.
“How many women?”
May you like
There was a pause.
“At least nine.”
