Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO DIED

Claire spent that night in a small apartment above a bakery.

It was not really an apartment.

It was one room.

A narrow bed.

A table.

A cracked window.

A secondhand lamp.

For three years, Claire had learned how little a person needed to survive.

She had once lived in a seven-bedroom house.

She had once worn silk dresses to charity galas.

She had once signed checks without looking at the amount.

Then Julian had died.

At least, that was what everyone told her.

The funeral had been private.

There had been a sealed coffin.

A photograph.

A priest.

And a lawyer who arrived two days later.

The lawyer told Claire there were debts.

Millions of dollars in debts.

The creditors took the house.

The bank froze the accounts.

Julian's company claimed his assets were protected by corporate structures Claire did not understand.

Even the family that had once invited her to Christmas dinner stopped returning her calls.

Within six months, she had lost everything.

But she had survived.

She found work cleaning rooms at the Bellmont Hotel.

She kept her head down.

She never spoke about Julian.

She never showed the gold band hidden beneath her uniform.

Then, ten days earlier, everything changed.

The hotel manager had accidentally left his office unlocked.

Claire had gone inside looking for a payroll file.

Instead, she found a folder labeled V-17.

Inside was Julian.

Alive.

Standing in Monaco.

Laughing.

Beside him was the same blonde woman from the lobby.

Sophia Renner.

An heiress.

Daughter of the Renner Hotel Group.

Claire read the documents until her hands shook.

Julian had not died.

He had disappeared.

He had transferred Claire's marital assets into shell companies.

He had purchased a controlling interest in several properties through a false identity.

And then he had used her supposed inheritance as collateral.

Claire had not been poor because Julian died.

She had been poor because Julian had planned for her to become poor.

The realization had broken something inside her.

But it had also awakened something.

Her fear.

Her shame.

Her grief.

Everything had changed direction.

They no longer pointed toward herself.

They pointed toward Julian.

Claire opened the notebook beside her bed.

On the first page, she had written one sentence.

HE DIDN'T DIE.

Below it were four more.

HE LIED.

HE STOLE.

HE ERased ME.

HE WILL PAY.

She opened the notebook to a fresh page.

Then she wrote one final sentence.

May you like

Tomorrow, I find out why.
