Chapter 1 - THREE SECONDS

Three seconds.

That was all Claire had.

Three seconds before Julian's security team could take the USB from her.

Three seconds before the hotel manager could decide whose version of the story to believe.

Three seconds before the man who had once promised to love her forever could erase her again.

Julian stepped closer.

"Give me the chain."

Claire's fingers tightened around the cart.

The blonde woman beside him stared at her.

"Julian, what is happening?"

"Nothing."

His answer came too quickly.

Claire saw it immediately.

Fear.

Not surprise.

Not grief.

Fear.

The same fear she had seen six months earlier when someone had called her from a Paris hospital and told her that her husband had died.

The same fear that had disappeared when she discovered his life insurance had already been collected.

The same fear that had returned when she found the USB drive.

The drive was small.

Black.

Almost weightless.

But inside it were documents capable of destroying Julian Vale.

Claire had found it in the hotel manager's private office.

She had only been looking for the missing payroll records she needed to understand why her wages had suddenly been reduced.

Instead, she had found invoices.

Bank transfers.

False passports.

Insurance documents.

And one photograph.

A photograph of Julian entering a private bank in Monaco eight weeks after his supposed death.

Claire looked at him now.

"I don't have anything that belongs to you."

Julian's eyes hardened.

"You're lying."

The blonde woman grabbed his sleeve.

"Who is she?"

Julian didn't answer.

Claire slowly reached into her apron.

Julian reacted instantly.

Two security guards stepped forward.

Claire froze.

Then she smiled.

It was the first real smile she had given him in three years.

"You should be worried about the person I already gave it to."

Julian went pale.

"What?"

Claire stepped away from the cart.

"I didn't come back for you."

She glanced at the woman beside him.

"I came back for the truth."

Then the lobby doors opened.

Three investigators walked inside.

Julian turned.

The tallest man held up a badge.

"Julian Vale?"

Julian stared at him.

"Yes."

"You are being detained for questioning regarding financial fraud, insurance fraud, identity manipulation, and the disappearance of Claire Vale."

The blonde woman gasped.

Claire did not move.

Julian looked at her.

"Claire."

This time, there was no tenderness in his voice.

Only panic.

"You have no idea what you've done."

Claire looked down at her worn shoes.

Then back at the man who had buried her while she was still alive.

"Actually, Julian."

May you like

"I finally do."
