Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR

One year after Julian's conviction, Claire returned to the Bellmont Hotel.
She wore a black dress.
No uniform.
No apron.
No hiding.
The lobby looked exactly the same.
The same marble floor.
The same chandelier.
The same polished doors.
She stood where Julian had once recognized her.
The memory came back.
Claire?
She remembered his expression.
The fear.
The disbelief.
The arrogance.
Then she remembered her own response.
I didn't come back for you.
A young maid passed by carrying a bucket.
Claire smiled at her.
"Beautiful night."
The girl smiled.
"Yes, ma'am."
Claire continued toward the elevators.
The hotel manager approached.
"You've changed this place."
Claire looked around.
"No."
She smiled.
"I changed myself."
The manager handed her a key.
"Someone left this for you."
Claire opened her hand.
It was her old gold wedding ring.
She stared at it.
For years, that ring had represented a promise.
Now it represented survival.
She walked to the nearest trash bin.
And dropped it inside.
Then she walked away.
May you like
She didn't look back.
