Chapter 18 - THE LIFE SHE NEVER IMAGINED

Six months later, Claire opened her first hotel.
Not a luxury hotel.
A recovery hotel.
Every room was designed for women rebuilding their lives.
They received temporary housing.
Legal assistance.
Employment training.
Financial counseling.
Claire named it The Silver Bell.
On opening night, Sophia attended quietly.
She approached Claire.
"I want to help."
Claire smiled.
"You already did."
Sophia looked down.
"I was part of it."
"You were."
"I regret it."
"I know."
Sophia nodded.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
Claire smiled.
"Then don't ask for it."
Sophia laughed softly.
They stood beneath the lights.
For the first time, Claire felt no anger.
The past had become a place.
Not a wound.
A place.
Something she could visit without living there.
Her father stood across the room.
Her mother was gone.
But her letter remained in Claire's office.
The final line was framed above her desk.
You are not what happened to you.
You are what you choose next.
May you like
Claire read it every morning.
