Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY GROUP CHAT
Vanessa made the mistake of moving the fight into writing.
Family group chat.
Mom.
Mark.
Vanessa.
Me.
Two cousins.
Aunt Susan.
She wrote.
Since Daniel refuses to communicate like an adult, everyone should know Emily created a scene at Christmas, struck Mom emotionally for years, and then manipulated Daniel into taking Lily away.
I stared at the message.
Emily was beside me.
“Don’t answer.”
I nodded.
Then Aunt Susan did.
I was at dinner.
That is not what happened.
Vanessa replied.
You didn’t hear everything.
Susan answered.
I heard enough.
Margaret slapped Emily.
Silence.
Then one cousin asked.
Why?
Susan wrote.
Because Vanessa kept insulting her and Emily finally answered back.
Vanessa exploded.
You have no idea what Emily has done to this family.
Susan replied.
Name one thing.
Nothing.
For two minutes.
Five.
Then Mom entered.
I made a terrible mistake.
But Daniel is being cruel by keeping Lily from me.
I finally typed.
Mom, Lily watched you hit her mother after years of hearing Vanessa insult her.
She is afraid.
This is not about revenge.
Mom replied.
I would never hurt Lily.
I wrote.
She watched you hurt someone she loves.
That hurt her.
Mark added.
He’s right.
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa responded immediately.
Unbelievable.
Now everyone is ganging up on Mom.
Susan wrote.
Accountability is not ganging up.
That sentence ended the conversation.
Mom left the group.
Vanessa left two minutes later.
Mark called me.
“I shouldn’t have waited this long.”
“For what?”
“To say something.”
I nodded.
“Neither should I.”
That mattered.
Not because Mark suddenly became brave.
Because truth stopped being mine alone.
Families can maintain dysfunction as long as every person thinks they are the only one seeing it.
The group chat broke that illusion.
That night, Lily asked why Grandma had not called.
I told her.
“She’s giving us space.”
“Because you told her?”
“Yes.”
Lily thought.
Then.
“Good.”
No sadness.

I made myself remember that.
