Chapter 10 - VANESSA LOSES CONTROL

Vanessa hated the letter.

Mark told me.

“She says Mom is humiliating herself.”

I laughed.

“By apologizing?”

“Apparently.”

Then Vanessa called Emily directly.

That was a mistake.

Emily answered because she did not recognize the number.

Vanessa began immediately.

“You’re enjoying this.”

Emily put the call on speaker.

I started recording after confirming our state’s applicable consent rules with counsel later for anything formal, but in the moment I simply listened.

Emily said.

“No.”

“You turned Daniel against his mother.”

“No.”

“You got what you wanted.”

“What did I want?”

“To be the center of his life.”

Emily laughed softly.

“I’m his wife.”

That sentence enraged Vanessa.

“You always thought you were better than us.”

Emily went still.

“No.”

“You hated that Mom could see through you.”

“See through what?”

“That you married up.”

There it was.

Trailer trash.

Coupons.

Pronunciation.

Napkins.

Six years compressed into one accusation.

Emily said.

“I married Daniel.”

“I didn’t marry his family bank account.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“You wouldn’t have looked at him twice if he were poor.”

I nearly laughed.

When Emily met me, I was buried in Dad’s medical debt and living in a one-bedroom apartment.

She knew.

Vanessa apparently did not.

Emily answered.

“Daniel had twelve thousand dollars in credit-card debt when we met.”

Silence.

I smiled despite myself.

Emily continued.

“I paid for our third date because his card declined.”

Another silence.

“You don’t know our marriage.”

Vanessa’s voice turned cold.

“I know you came from nothing.”

Emily’s expression changed.

Not hurt this time.

Done.

“Yes.”

“I did.”

“And?”

Vanessa had no answer.

Emily continued.

“I came from a trailer.”

“My mother had addiction problems.”

“My stepfather gambled.”

“I worked through school.”

“None of that makes me ashamed.”

“You’re the only person still trying to use it like a weapon.”

Then she hung up.

I stared at her.

“What?”

She asked.

“I think I just fell in love with you again.”

She laughed.

Then immediately started crying.

May you like

Standing up does not mean words stop hurting.

It means you stop letting hurt decide whether you speak.
