Chapter 4 - VANESSA COMES TO MY HOUSE

Three days after Christmas, Vanessa appeared on my porch.

I saw her through the camera.

Long coat.

Perfect hair.

No shame.

I did not open the door.

She rang again.

Then knocked.

Finally, I spoke through the intercom.

“What do you want?”

Her face changed when she realized I was not letting her inside.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“I want to talk.”

“Then talk.”

“Through a doorbell?”

“Yes.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Emily has really got you trained.”

That sentence did something unexpected.

It made me calm.

“No.”

“I’m just done letting you walk into my house and insult my wife.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Mom hasn’t eaten properly.”

“That’s not Emily’s responsibility.”

“She cries constantly.”

“Still not Emily’s responsibility.”

“She thinks she lost you.”

I looked at the screen.

“She slapped my wife.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“One slap.”

There it was.

I asked.

“If I slapped your husband at dinner, would you call it one slap?”

Silence.

“If Emily slapped Mom?”

Her mouth tightened.

“Different.”

“How?”

“Mom is older.”

“So?”

“She’s your mother.”

“And Emily is my wife.”

Vanessa stared at the camera.

“You’ve changed.”

“Yes.”

She said it like an accusation.

I answered like it was progress.

Then she dropped the real reason she came.

“Mom is changing her will.”

I almost laughed.

“What?”

“She’s upset.”

“She says if you keep Lily from her, she’ll leave your share to Mark and me.”

For twenty years, that threat would have mattered.

Not because I needed the money.

Because Mom used inheritance like a scoreboard.

Who was loyal.

Who was good.

Who stayed close enough.

I smiled.

“Tell her okay.”

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

“Tell her it’s her money.”

“You’re willing to lose hundreds of thousands because Emily can’t forgive one mistake?”

“No.”

“I’m willing to stop negotiating my family’s dignity.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

“You’ll regret this.”

“Maybe.”

Then I added.

“But it will be my regret.”

I ended the call.

Ten minutes later, Mom texted from another number.

Vanessa told me what you said.

I cannot believe you would throw away your family.

I replied.

I’m trying to protect mine.

Then I blocked that number too.

That evening, Emily cried in the bathroom.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because she heard everything.

When she came out, she said.

“No one has ever chosen me like that before.”

May you like

I held her.

“You should’ve never had to earn it.”
