Chapter 14 - VANESSA’S LAST WEAPON
Vanessa went after Emily publicly.
A Facebook post.
Long.
Vague enough to sound innocent.
Some people enter families and slowly isolate sons from mothers, brothers from siblings, grandchildren from traditions.
No names.
No need.
Everyone knew.
Comments filled with sympathy.
Stay strong.
Toxic daughters-in-law are real.
A mother should never lose her son.
Emily read it once.
Then closed the app.
I wanted to respond.
She stopped me.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she wants a public trial.”
“She deserves an answer.”
“She wants attention.”
That was true.
Then Aunt Susan commented.
Sometimes sons distance themselves because someone slapped their wife at dinner after years of insults.
Vanessa deleted the post within ten minutes.
I laughed so hard I scared Lily.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Susan called later.
“I’m too old for vague-booking.”
That became our favorite phrase.
But Vanessa’s post had consequences.
Sophie saw it.
She confronted her mother.
“Why are you lying?”
Vanessa denied lying.
Sophie screenshotted the comments before deletion.
Then sent them to Mark.
That fight became the final break.
Mark moved into the guest room.
Six weeks later, Vanessa filed for separation.
She blamed Emily.
Of course.
Mark did not.
He told me.
“Our marriage had problems before Christmas.”
“I just liked having someone else to blame.”
That was the family disease.
