Chapter 19 - THE SECOND CHRISTMAS DINNER

Two years after the slap, Mom invited us to dinner.
Not Christmas.
December twenty-third.
Small.
Only Mom.
Us.
Mark.
Sophie.
No Vanessa.
Emily agreed.
The dining room looked different.
Smaller table.
Simple candles.
Paper napkins.
I noticed.
Mom noticed me noticing.
“Don’t say anything.”
I smiled.
Dinner went well for forty-five minutes.
Then Mom burned the green beans.
We all smelled it.
Silence.
Then Sophie began laughing.
Mark joined.
Emily covered her mouth.
Mom stared at the blackened pan.
Then she laughed too.
Two years earlier, burned green beans helped start a war.
Now Mom opened the window and ordered pizza.
That was growth.
Halfway through dinner, she raised her glass.
I tensed.
She noticed.
“No speech.”
“Thank God.”
She ignored me.
“One sentence.”
We waited.
“I’m grateful you came back when you were ready.”
Emily reached across the table.
Touched her hand.
No one mentioned forgiveness.
No one needed to.
After dinner, Lily helped Mom wash dishes.
I heard Mom say.
“Cloth napkins are overrated.”
Lily answered.
“What are cloth napkins?”
Emily and I looked at each other.
May you like
Then started laughing.
Some family traditions deserve to die.
