Chapter 11 - MARK’S DAUGHTER
The family pattern finally reached Mark’s house.
His fourteen-year-old daughter, Sophie, overheard Vanessa calling Emily trash during an argument with Mark.
Sophie said.
“Why are you like that?”
Vanessa turned.
“Excuse me?”
“You’re mean.”
Mark told me later.
Vanessa ordered Sophie upstairs.
Sophie refused.
Then Vanessa said.
“You don’t talk to your mother that way.”
Sophie answered.
“You talk to Aunt Emily worse.”
Silence.
Teenagers are dangerous to hypocrisy.
Mark said Vanessa grounded her.
Then they fought for two hours.
Finally, Mark did something he had never done.
He overruled Vanessa.
No grounding.
Not for saying an uncomfortable truth.
Vanessa left the house for the night.
Mark called me at midnight.
“I think I understand now.”
“Understand what?”
“Why Emily snapped.”
“She didn’t snap.”
He sighed.
“Right.”
“Why she stopped taking it.”
I waited.
Mark continued.
“Sophie looked scared after Vanessa started yelling.”
“And all I could think was Lily at Christmas.”
That was how empathy finally arrived.
Not because Mark understood Emily’s childhood.
Because the same behavior moved close enough to touch his child.
He sounded ashamed of that too.
“I should’ve cared before.”
“Yes.”
No comfort.
He deserved the truth.
Then he asked.
“What do I do?”
“About Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re my brother.”
“Not your therapist.”
He laughed despite everything.
“Fair.”
I told him what Maya told me.
“Stop managing her feelings for her.”
Mark went quiet.
“That sounds impossible.”
“It did to me too.”
He tried.
Within two weeks, Vanessa and Mark began couples counseling.
Vanessa went because she thought the therapist would prove Mark had become disloyal.
Instead, the therapist apparently used the phrase contempt pattern.
Vanessa quit after three sessions.
