Chapter 5 - BLACKSTONE LEGACY SERVICES

Blackstone Legacy Services operated from a restored stone estate forty minutes north of the mansion.

The company described itself as a private wealth-management and guardianship firm.

Its website promised protection for “families navigating grief, inheritance, and complex transitions.”

Amelia had underlined those words in her notebook.

Grief.

Inheritance.

Transition.

Those were not services.

They were opportunities.

Blackstone identified wealthy families after a death.

Richard manipulated their finances.

Celeste entered their personal lives.

Graham Pike created legal documents granting them control.

According to public records, the company had advised nineteen families in ten years.

Seven widowers remarried women associated with Blackstone.

Five children were transferred to overseas boarding schools.

Three estates entered long guardianship disputes.

More than two hundred million dollars had disappeared through offshore investments.

Ethan sat beside Detective Ortiz in an unmarked car outside the Blackstone estate.

Sophie remained at the mansion with Nora and two state officers.

Ethan hated leaving her.

He also knew Amelia had hidden evidence here for a reason.

Building Four stood behind the main administrative structure.

The police warrant covered Locker Eleven and any connected digital records.

Inside the storage building, they found rows of numbered steel units.

Locker Eleven accepted Amelia’s brass key.

The key was gone.

However, Detective Ortiz had authorization to cut the lock.

Inside were filing boxes, old phones, and sealed envelopes labeled with family names.

Whitmore.

Grant.

Bellamy.

Caldwell.

Sterling.

Each name represented a wealthy family Blackstone had approached after a death.

A smaller compartment was built into the rear wall.

The number twenty-seven was written beneath the handle.

Ethan entered Sophie’s birth date into the keypad.

The compartment opened.

Inside rested Amelia’s original trust documents.

A portable hard drive lay beneath them.

There was also a digital recorder.

Ethan pressed play.

Richard’s voice filled the narrow room.

“We cannot move the trust while Ethan is alive and competent.”

Celeste answered.

“Then he will not remain competent.”

“What about Sophie?”

“She travels with me as soon as Pike files the emergency guardianship order.”

“She must appear at the verification appointment.”

“And afterward?”

“We place her at Saint Agatha’s under a new name.”

“She will be safe.”

“She will be invisible.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“And Ethan?”

Celeste answered without hesitation.

“His wife died in an accident.”

“People will believe grief finally destroyed him.”

Ethan stopped the recording.

Detective Ortiz remained silent for a moment.

“They planned to make your mental collapse look believable.”

“They spent two years preparing it.”

A second recording contained Amelia’s confrontation with Richard.

She accused him of forging trust amendments.

Richard threatened to expose Ethan’s company to criminal investigations.

Amelia refused to remain silent.

The conversation ended with a door slamming.

Then a quieter voice spoke near the recorder.

It belonged to Graham Pike.

“Make sure the car is taken to our mechanic before morning.”

Detective Ortiz immediately called the district attorney.

Amelia’s crash had been investigated as a mechanical failure.

The vehicle was later destroyed with the family’s permission.

Graham Pike had arranged the disposal.

A movement sounded near the storage entrance.

The overhead lights shut off.

Detective Ortiz raised her flashlight.

A metallic object rolled across the floor.

Smoke began pouring from it.

Someone had entered the building while they were inside.

Ethan covered his mouth.

Detective Ortiz pulled him behind a row of lockers.

The portable hard drive disappeared from the open compartment.

Footsteps raced toward the exit.

Ethan followed despite the smoke.

He reached the doorway in time to see a man climb into a waiting vehicle.

Richard sat behind the wheel.

Celeste occupied the passenger seat.

Before the car accelerated away, Celeste held up the stolen hard drive.

Then she smiled.
