Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO WROTE THE LIES

Graham Pike entered the treatment corridor wearing a dark raincoat.
Two armed security contractors followed him.
The contractors surrendered when federal officers appeared behind them.
Pike continued alone.
He believed the documents in his hand still protected him.
“I have a court order granting Celeste custody.”
Detective Ortiz held up her phone.
“The order was suspended.”
“The judge lacked authority.”
“You bribed the first judge.”
“That accusation will require proof.”
“We have Amelia’s recordings.”
“They are illegally obtained.”
“We have Lydia.”
“She is a fraud.”
“We have Richard.”
Pike smiled.
“Richard will say anything to save himself.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“We have my father’s original amendment.”
For the first time, Pike’s confidence shifted.
“That document does not exist.”
Ethan removed the strip of film from Amelia’s photograph.
Pike stared at it.
Thomas Whitmore had once trusted Pike completely.
Together, they created Blackstone to manage complicated estates.
Pike discovered that guardianship courts allowed enormous power with limited oversight.
He began moving vulnerable heirs into private institutions.
He acquired property from adults declared incompetent.
He altered trusts.
He paid doctors to produce convenient reports.
Thomas eventually realized what was happening.
He created the restitution fund and prepared to report Pike.
Lydia adjusted Thomas’s medication.
Pike did not personally kill him.
He merely ensured that no one questioned the death.
Amelia later uncovered the same pattern.
Pike arranged the company sedan.
Again, he avoided touching the final weapon.
He simply created the circumstances.
“You built an empire by standing one step away from every crime,” Ethan said.
Pike looked toward Sophie.
“The girl does not understand what she carries.”
“She carries nothing that belongs to you.”
“The restitution fund was created with Whitmore money.”
“It was created with money stolen through Blackstone.”
Pike’s hand moved beneath his coat.
Richard struck him from the side.
A gun fell onto the concrete.
Officers restrained Pike.
Richard collapsed against the wall.
Pike had stabbed him with a narrow letter opener during the struggle.
The wound was serious but not immediately fatal.
Paramedics moved toward him.
Richard caught Ethan’s sleeve.
“Celeste has another plane.”
“Where?”
“She never trusted the Saint Agatha pilot.”
“There is an old Whitmore airstrip across the lake.”
“The plane is hidden inside the northern hangar.”
Ethan knew the location.
His father had used the airstrip for hunting trips.
It had been abandoned after Thomas died.
Celeste’s real escape route had always been Whitmore property.
She intended to take the restitution money, use Sophie’s identity, and leave from the airstrip created by the family she blamed.
Detective Ortiz secured Pike and Lydia.
Richard was transported toward the coast guard vessel.
Before leaving, he looked at Sophie.
“I am sorry.”
Sophie remained behind Nora.
“You helped Celeste put me in the case.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Sorry doesn’t open it.”
“No.”
“It doesn’t.”
The paramedics carried him away.
Ethan understood the wisdom in his daughter’s simple answer.
An apology could acknowledge a wound.
It could not erase the moment the lock closed.
A bank alert appeared on Detective Ortiz’s phone.
Someone had entered the first half of Thomas’s account code incorrectly three times.
The request came from a terminal inside the abandoned Whitmore airstrip.
Celeste was already there.
May you like
After the fourth failed attempt, the fund would permanently lock.
Celeste had one attempt remaining.
