Chapter 15 - THE RESTITUTION FUND

The Whitmore airstrip stood on the eastern side of the lake.

The fastest route required a coast guard crossing followed by a drive through forest roads.

A storm covered the water.

Celeste had at least a thirty-minute advantage.

Ethan, Detective Ortiz, Sophie, and Nora traveled together.

Ethan refused to separate from his daughter again.

Sophie wore a protective vest beneath Nora’s coat.

Two federal agents accompanied them.

The full account code remained in Ethan’s memory.

Amelia’s original letter stayed with Detective Ortiz.

The photograph remained inside a waterproof evidence sleeve.

At the airstrip, Celeste entered Thomas’s old office.

The banking terminal displayed a final warning.

One attempt remaining.

She had discovered the first six digits by examining Amelia’s message during the years she lived inside the mansion.

She did not know the final number.

She tried Sophie’s birthday.

Wrong.

She tried Amelia’s birthday.

Wrong.

She tried Ethan’s birthday.

Wrong.

The account would lock after the next failure.

Celeste pushed away from the desk.

The restitution fund was not only money.

To her, it represented acknowledgment that the Whitmore family had destroyed her mother.

Thomas created the fund in secret.

He never publicly admitted what Blackstone had done.

He never returned Margaret Marlowe’s home.

He never apologized to Celeste.

Now Ethan intended to distribute the money to hundreds of families.

Celeste believed her suffering entitled her to all of it.

The small aircraft waited inside the hangar.

Fuel filled its tanks.

Fake passports rested on the passenger seat.

One passport identified Celeste as Claire Beaumont.

Another carried Sophie’s name and photograph.

Celeste planned to leave with or without the account.

However, the child’s identity offered protection at the border.

She needed Sophie one final time.

Ethan’s vehicles reached the outer road shortly before ten.

The access gate was chained.

Federal agents cut through it.

Inside the office, Celeste watched their headlights through the rain.

She opened the building’s old security controls.

Thomas Whitmore had installed steel doors throughout the hangar.

Celeste activated them one by one.

The property became a maze.

Ethan entered through the maintenance corridor he remembered from childhood.

His father used to bring him there on Sunday mornings.

Thomas taught him how to inspect aircraft engines.

He also taught him never to question the adults controlling the family.

Amelia had taught him the opposite.

Love was not silence.

Sophie held his hand.

“Mom knew you would come here.”

“How?”

“She said Grandpa hid his worst secret where he taught you to fly.”

Ethan stopped.

Thomas’s account terminal might not be the only secret at the airstrip.

Behind the old flight map, he found a recessed safe.

The film from Amelia’s photograph opened the electronic scanner.

Inside were original Blackstone client records.

Thomas had documented every family Pike exploited.

He left signed instructions ordering Ethan to release the records if Blackstone ever targeted another Whitmore child.

Thomas had died before delivering them.

Amelia found the safe years later.

She took only enough evidence to create her warning.

A voice came through the hangar speaker.

Celeste had activated the communication system.

“Bring Sophie to the control room.”

“Then this ends.”

Ethan looked toward the camera.

“You are surrounded.”

“So are you.”

A steel door closed behind Nora and the agents.

Ethan and Sophie were trapped alone inside the northern hangar.

The aircraft engine began turning.
