Chapter 17 - AMELIA’S FINAL WARNING

Ethan grabbed Sophie and pulled her behind the concrete equipment barrier.

Flames spread across the leaking fuel.

Celeste moved away from the aircraft.

Pike refused to release the biometric device.

He ran toward the office as smoke filled the hangar.

The aircraft’s fuel tank could ignite within minutes.

Federal agents worked to open the sealed doors from outside.

Nora’s voice came through the intercom.

“Ethan, the emergency release is inside the control room.”

The control room stood beyond the burning aircraft.

Pike reached it first.

He locked the door and entered Thomas’s account terminal.

The screen requested the full code and a Whitmore fingerprint.

Pike placed the biometric device beside it.

It contained a preserved print taken from Thomas’s old aviation license.

The print passed the first security check.

The system requested the seven-digit code.

Pike knew the six digits hidden in the photograph.

He did not know Sophie’s final number.

Celeste did.

She had heard Sophie describe Amelia’s bedtime routine during the first year inside the mansion.

Three kisses.

Forehead, nose, and cheek.

Celeste ran toward the control room.

Ethan caught her arm.

“If Pike receives the code, every victim loses the money.”

“If the fuel ignites, everyone dies.”

“Open the emergency doors first.”

Celeste looked toward Sophie.

The child remained behind the barrier, calling for her father.

Something broke inside Celeste’s expression.

For two years, she had lived in Amelia’s bedroom.

She wore Amelia’s jewelry.

She tried to become the woman whose life she had helped destroy.

Yet Sophie had never once confused them.

Celeste could control documents.

She could not control memory.

She gave Ethan the pistol.

“The manual release is beneath the terminal.”

“What are you doing?”

“Correcting one thing.”

Celeste crossed the burning section using a maintenance blanket as protection.

She reached the control room and struck the glass with a fire extinguisher.

Pike turned.

She shouted the wrong final number.

“Seven.”

Pike entered 6198247.

The account locked permanently.

Every access credential connected to Blackstone was automatically disabled.

Pike stared at the screen.

Celeste broke through the glass.

He seized her by the coat.

She pulled the emergency release beneath the terminal.

The northern hangar doors began opening.

Rain rushed across the floor.

Federal agents entered.

Pike tried to drag Celeste toward the rear office.

She fought him.

The old ceiling supports shook from the heat.

Ethan carried Sophie toward the open doors.

Nora reached them.

A section of burning metal fell between Ethan and the control room.

Celeste remained trapped with Pike.

Detective Ortiz appeared through the smoke.

“Celeste, move toward the east wall.”

Pike held the weapon near Celeste’s side.

“You destroyed three hundred million dollars.”

“No,” Ethan shouted.

“The lock only blocks private access.”

“The court can still release the fund to the victims.”

Pike’s plan had failed.

He could not steal the money.

He could not hide the records.

He could no longer control the people who had protected him.

He raised the weapon.

Celeste pushed his arm upward.

The shot struck the ceiling.

Detective Ortiz crossed the room and forced Pike to the floor.

Agents pulled Celeste away.

The fuel tank ignited seconds after everyone cleared the hangar.

The explosion destroyed the plane and control room.

The original Blackstone files remained protected inside Thomas’s fireproof safe.

Outside in the rain, Celeste sat in restraints.

Sophie stood several feet away beside Ethan.

Celeste looked at the child.

“I did not save you.”

Sophie said nothing.

“I saved the fund.”

Sophie tightened her hold on Ethan’s hand.

“Mom said love tells the truth.”

Celeste lowered her eyes.

The truth was simple.

Her final act had protected Sophie.

It did not erase everything she had done before it.
