Chapter 11 - THE FATHER’S SIGNATURE
Thomas Whitmore had died twelve years earlier.
The family remembered him as a disciplined banker who built the Whitmore fortune through real estate and private investments.
Ethan remembered something different.
His father was controlling.
He distrusted outsiders.
He treated affection like a financial negotiation.
Thomas created dozens of shell companies, but Ethan had never seen the Blackstone name in family records.
Richard claimed Thomas founded Blackstone after Ethan’s mother died.
He wanted a private organization capable of managing vulnerable heirs and protecting family assets from public courts.
The original purpose might have been legal.
Graham Pike transformed it.
Pike used Blackstone to gain control of families during periods of grief.
Thomas discovered the abuse near the end of his life.
He threatened to expose Pike.
He died of a sudden heart condition before he could act.
Lydia Crane had been his private nurse.
Ethan felt another piece of his family history collapse.
Blackstone had not selected the Whitmores randomly.
The organization had returned to the family that created it.
Pike believed Sophie’s inheritance contained accounts and documents Thomas had hidden from him.
Amelia discovered that truth while investigating Richard.
She placed the final evidence inside the photograph.
Ethan examined the frame more carefully.
The photograph had been laminated between two thin sheets.
One edge was slightly thicker.
Nora used a small sewing needle to separate it.
A narrow strip of film slid out.
It contained a photographed contract.
Thomas Whitmore’s signature appeared at the bottom.
The contract established Blackstone Legacy Services.
However, a handwritten amendment appeared beneath it.
Blackstone shall never hold guardianship authority over a minor beneficiary.
Any officer attempting such control forfeits every related claim.
Thomas had discovered Pike’s plan and added a restriction that would destroy Blackstone’s legal access to Sophie’s inheritance.
Pike removed the amendment from the official copy.
Amelia photographed the original.
That was why Celeste needed the picture destroyed.
The forged guardianship order depended on the court believing Blackstone had valid authority.
The film proved otherwise.
Detective Ortiz sent digital copies to federal prosecutors and the judge reviewing Celeste’s emergency petition.
Within minutes, the guardianship order was suspended.
Every Blue Harbor account connected to Sophie’s trust was frozen.
Celeste no longer had a legal or financial reason to keep Sophie.
That made the situation more dangerous.
A person losing control of a plan could become unpredictable.
The team reached Saint Agatha’s outer gate at seven twenty.
The director, Father Martin Vale, refused to open it.
Detective Ortiz displayed the warrant.
The gate remained closed.
Richard pointed toward an old maintenance road.
“It leads to the medical tunnel.”
They entered through the forest.
The tunnel door was open.
Inside, wheel tracks crossed the concrete floor.
Sophie’s small shoe lay near the wall.
Ethan picked it up.
A child’s handwriting appeared in dust beside it.
MOM’S SONG.
Four arrows had been drawn beneath the words.
Sophie was leaving clues.
Amelia had taught her to count the verses of the lullaby whenever she became frightened.
The fourth verse mentioned water beneath stone.
The tunnel divided into four paths.
Ethan chose the path with water flowing beneath the floor.
They reached a locked steel door.
Sophie’s voice came from the other side.
“Daddy, don’t open it.”
Ethan froze.
“Why?”
A woman began counting backward.
“Ten.”
“Nine.”
