Chapter 12 - THE TUNNEL BENEATH THE SCHOOL

Detective Ortiz examined the doorframe.
A thin wire ran from the handle to a pressurized medical canister.
Opening the door would release a heavy cloud of sedative gas into the corridor.
Lydia had used the same substance to weaken Amelia.
The team shut off the tunnel ventilation and entered through an adjacent maintenance hatch.
They found Sophie inside a treatment room.
Her wrists were not restrained.
She sat beneath a blanket while Lydia stood beside the gas controls.
Celeste was gone.
Lydia raised a syringe.
“Stay back.”
Ethan stopped.
Sophie looked at him.
“I’m okay.”
Lydia placed the syringe near the child’s sleeve.
“It is only a sedative.”
“Put it down,” Detective Ortiz ordered.
“You have no idea what Celeste will do if you take Sophie.”
“She no longer controls the trust.”
“That was never her only reason.”
Ethan looked at Lydia.
“What does she want?”
“Revenge.”
“Against whom?”
“The Whitmores.”
Lydia revealed that Celeste’s mother, Margaret Marlowe, had been placed under a Blackstone guardianship twenty-three years earlier.
Graham Pike controlled her estate.
Thomas Whitmore’s company acquired her land for a fraction of its value.
Margaret died in a state facility.
Celeste grew up believing the Whitmores had destroyed her family.
She joined Blackstone intending to expose it.
Instead, she learned how profitable its methods could be.
She married Richard and began repeating the same abuses against others.
When Celeste discovered Sophie would inherit the controlling interest in Whitmore Holdings, the plan became personal.
She did not merely want the money.
She wanted the Whitmore family erased.
“You drugged Amelia for her,” Ethan said.
Lydia’s hand trembled.
“I believed Amelia was helping hide what Thomas did.”
“She was investigating it.”
“I learned that too late.”
“Then help us.”
Lydia looked toward Sophie.
“She promised no child would ever be physically harmed.”
“You locked one inside luggage.”
“That was Celeste.”
“You took Sophie from a protected home.”
“That was supposed to force Ethan to surrender the photograph.”
“Everything is always someone else’s act.”
The same pattern had protected Blackstone for years.
Each person performed only one piece of the crime.
Lydia drugged.
Pike forged.
Richard transferred money.
Celeste manipulated.
No one accepted responsibility for the entire result.
Sophie began humming her mother’s lullaby.
Lydia looked down at her.
Ethan moved.
He grabbed Sophie and pulled her behind the treatment table.
Detective Ortiz crossed the room and knocked the syringe from Lydia’s hand.
Officers restrained her.
Ethan held his daughter.
“You found me,” Sophie whispered.
“I will always find you.”
Sophie shook her head.
“Celeste took the letter.”
“What letter?”
“The one Grandma Nora brought.”
Nora checked the waterproof bag.
Amelia’s letter to Sophie was missing.
Celeste had passed through the treatment room minutes earlier.
She took the letter and continued toward the seaplane dock.
Ethan did not understand why a criminal running out of time would stop for a personal letter.
Lydia gave the answer.
“Amelia’s letter contains the second half of Thomas Whitmore’s account code.”
“What account?”
“The restitution fund.”
Thomas had hidden money intended for families harmed by Blackstone.
The fund had grown to nearly three hundred million dollars.
Celeste believed it belonged to her.
The first half of the code was written behind Amelia’s photograph.
The second was hidden in the letter to Sophie.
Celeste now had one half.
Ethan still held the other.

A loud engine started beyond the tunnel.
The seaplane was preparing to leave.
