Chapter 8 - The Forged Daughter

The document appeared the next morning.
Filed in Delaware Chancery Court.
Petition to challenge historical succession.
Claim.
Cassidy’s mother, Elena Mercer, was not Jonathan Mercer’s biological daughter.
Therefore her inheritance was invalid.
Therefore Cassidy’s controlling trust was invalid.
Therefore Halcyon ownership should revert to surviving legacy beneficiaries.
Beneficiary listed.
Arthur Pierce Family Trust.
Cassidy read the filing twice.
Brendan said.
“That’s insane.”
Cassidy looked at him.
“Today is full of surprises.”
The filing included DNA documentation.
Birth records.
Private letters.
Photographs.
All supposedly proving Elena Mercer had been adopted secretly.
Cassidy remembered her mother.
Dark hair.
Quiet humor.
The way she hated cameras.
The way Jonathan called her “my girl” even when she was forty.
None of that proved biology.
But the trust language might matter.
Mara brought in independent estate counsel.
They reviewed the original Mercer trust.
If Elena was legally adopted, she still inherited.
If she had never been legally recognized as Jonathan’s child, litigation became more complicated.
Cassidy felt anger.
Not fear.
Someone expected identity uncertainty to destabilize her.
Then Daniel looked at the DNA report.
“Who supplied Cassidy’s sample?”
Everyone went quiet.
The report claimed a discarded drinking glass.
Collected three months earlier.
Cassidy looked toward Margaret.
The annual Holloway Christmas dinner.
Three months ago.
Naomi attended briefly.
Victor too.
Someone could have taken a glass.
Mara contacted the lab.
The sample existed.
But the comparison sample supposedly belonging to Jonathan Mercer came from preserved tissue stored at a university pathology center.
Access request.
Arthur Pierce.
Forged court order.
Cassidy almost laughed.
Everything led back.
Then outside counsel found a problem.
The DNA comparison did suggest no biological relationship.
Brendan looked at Cassidy.
She felt suddenly unsteady.
Mara asked.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
But her voice changed.
Maybe the report was real.
Maybe her mother had not been Jonathan’s biological daughter.
Then she remembered her grandfather.
Blood is the least interesting thing families share.
He used to say that.
At the time, Cassidy thought he meant philosophy.
Maybe he meant history.
Daniel continued reading.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked.
“The trust does not say biological descendants.”
“It says issue recognized by settlor.”
Mara smiled slightly.
Meaning Jonathan intentionally avoided biology.
Cassidy sat down.
He had known.
Long ago.
Her mother may indeed have been adopted.
And Jonathan wrote the trust specifically to protect her.
The forged inheritance challenge failed at its central assumption.
But one question remained.
Why had her mother hidden it?
Then Cassidy received an email.
Sender.
Naomi Pierce.
