Chapter 11 - Victor Lang

Victor Lang entered carrying a briefcase.

Not a weapon.

That made him more dangerous in a different way.

He had spent fifteen years converting crimes into documents that looked legal.

Mara’s team entered behind him.

Victor smiled.

“I expected federal agents eventually.”

Cassidy came downstairs.

“You burned my records warehouse.”

“No.”

“Naomi did.”

Naomi stared.

“You told me to.”

Victor shrugged.

“You’re an adult.”

There it was.

The first crack between them.

Cassidy looked at the briefcase.

“What is that?”

Victor opened it.

Original trust amendments.

Board consents.

Medical affidavits.

Guardianship drafts.

And private agreements signed by Brendan.

Victor looked almost proud.

“Insurance.”

“For whom?”

“Myself.”

He had kept originals because he knew the Holloways would blame him.

He had records showing Margaret authorized early payments.

Brendan approved Project Heir.

Serena arranged medical contacts.

Dr. Porter provided falsified notes.

Naomi supplied trust information.

Victor built the legal architecture.

Cassidy asked.

“Why?”

He looked at her as though the answer were obvious.

“Because ownership transitions create opportunity.”

No ideology.

No family resentment.

Money.

Victor had negotiated for six percent of Halcyon after the Holloways gained influence.

Naomi looked stunned.

“You told me this was about restoring Pierce rights.”

Victor laughed.

“That was your motivation.”

“Not mine.”

Naomi stepped backward.

Every conspirator had been given a different story.

Margaret.

Protect the Holloway legacy.

Brendan.

Protect parental rights.

Serena.

Get money and status.

Naomi.

Restore Pierce inheritance.

Dr. Porter.

Consulting fees.

Victor.

Equity.

He connected grievances and monetized them.

Cassidy almost admired the simplicity.

Mara arrested him.

Victor did not resist.

Before being led away, he looked at Cassidy.

“Protocol 7 saved you.”

Cassidy shook her head.

“No.”

“Documentation did.”

His smile vanished.

Naomi sat on the stairs.

“What happens to me?”

Mara answered.

“That depends on how much truth you tell next.”

Naomi looked at Cassidy.

“I’m sorry.”

Cassidy felt nothing useful in response.

“Tell investigators.”

May you like

Apologies could wait.

Evidence could not.
