Chapter 18 - Sentences

The criminal cases concluded over the following year.

Victor Lang received a long federal sentence for fraud, conspiracy, destruction of records, and attempted corporate theft.

Arthur Pierce received a reduced sentence because of age but lost access to the offshore assets.

Dr. Porter lost her medical license and pleaded guilty to falsifying records and participating in fraud.

Naomi received a shorter sentence after extensive cooperation.

Serena avoided the harshest financial charges by testifying, but she still received probation, restitution obligations, and a conviction related to fraudulent contracting.

Margaret was convicted of conspiracy, financial fraud, and assault-related charges.

Her sentence was substantial but shorter than Victor’s.

Brendan pleaded guilty to financial misconduct and conspiracy connected to Project Heir.

His cooperation mattered.

So did his signature.

He received a sentence that included limited incarceration followed by monitored release.

Cassidy did not attend every sentencing.

She had stopped organizing her life around other people’s consequences.

At Brendan’s hearing, she went because Emma’s future relationship with him mattered.

He spoke before sentencing.

“I believed being a husband and father gave me rights before it gave me obligations.”

Cassidy listened.

“I believed my family’s business history entitled me to control of a company I did not understand.”

He continued.

“And when I became afraid of losing status, I let people turn my child into leverage.”

His voice broke.

“That is the part I will spend the rest of my life regretting.”

Cassidy believed him.

Belief did not erase accountability.

The judge imposed sentence.

Brendan accepted it.

No outburst.

No blaming Cassidy.

That mattered too.

Margaret never apologized sincerely.

Her final statement still called Cassidy vindictive.

Cassidy stopped hoping for anything else.
