Chapter 17 - The Baby

Cassidy went into labor five weeks early.
At 2:11 a.m.
Her first thought was absurd.
Not now.
As though babies respected investigation schedules.
Mara happened to be on the phone with her when the contraction hit.
Thirty minutes later, Cassidy was at the hospital.
No Margaret.
No Brendan initially.
No family spectacle.
Just Cassidy.
Her sister Olivia.
And a medical team she had chosen herself after replacing Dr. Porter.
The baby arrived after nine hours.
A girl.
Six pounds, one ounce.
Healthy.
Furious.
Cassidy cried when they placed her against her chest.
“Hello, Emma.”
She had chosen the name months earlier.
Brendan arrived later under hospital-approved conditions.
He stood outside the room until Cassidy agreed.
That mattered.
He did not enter because he believed fatherhood gave automatic permission.
He asked.
Cassidy said yes.
Brendan approached slowly.
He saw Emma.
His face broke.
“She’s so small.”
“She’s early.”
“Is she okay?”
“Yes.”
He cried.
Cassidy watched.
Part of her remembered the man who laughed while dirty water ran down her dress.
Another part remembered who he was before resentment, entitlement, and family pressure consumed everything.
Both versions existed.
Brendan whispered.
“I’m sorry.”
Cassidy looked at Emma.
“Be better for her.”
He nodded.
That was all she gave him.
Not reconciliation.
Not forgiveness.
A direction.
Later, Olivia asked.
“You trust him?”
Cassidy answered.
“No.”
“Then why let him see her?”
“Because trust can be rebuilt in controlled steps.”
“If he fails, access changes.”
Olivia smiled faintly.
“You sound like a board policy.”
Cassidy laughed.
“Occupational damage.”
Outside the window, dawn arrived.
No black SUVs.
No frozen accounts.
May you like
No bucket.
Just sunlight.
