Chapter 14 - Margaret’s Hearing
Margaret entered court wearing navy blue.
The same color she wore to charity luncheons.
Respectable.
Controlled.
Her attorney argued the dirty-water incident had been an emotional family dispute.
Then the security footage played.
Margaret lifting the bucket.
Cassidy standing still.
Brendan laughing.
Serena smiling.
Water pouring over Cassidy’s pregnant body.
Then Margaret grabbing Cassidy’s arm when she reached for the phone.
The room became quiet.
The attorney stopped calling it a misunderstanding.
More serious were the financial charges.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Misuse of corporate funds.
Participation in forged legal planning.
Margaret’s defense claimed Victor manipulated the family.
Victor’s documents showed she had initiated several payments herself.
Then came the email about Cassidy.
Need her financially dependent after separation.
Block distributions if possible.
Cassidy read it from the gallery.
Margaret had spent years calling her poor while actively trying to keep her financially constrained.
The irony was almost perfect.
The prosecutor asked Margaret why.
Margaret answered.
“She married into our family and then acted as though she had authority over everything.”
The prosecutor looked surprised.
“She owned the company.”
“We didn’t know that.”
“So your behavior would have been acceptable if she were actually poor?”
Margaret stopped.
That question mattered.
The humiliation was wrong before Cassidy’s wealth was revealed.
The forged guardianship was wrong regardless of who controlled Halcyon.
The money made the reversal dramatic.
It did not create Cassidy’s dignity.
At the end of the hearing, Margaret’s bail conditions prohibited contact with Cassidy.
Her access to Halcyon properties remained revoked.
As she passed the gallery, she looked at Cassidy’s belly.
Then at Cassidy.
“You destroyed this family.”
Cassidy answered quietly.
“No.”

Margaret looked away first.
