Chapter 1 - Protocol 7

The freezing water hit Cassidy from the shoulders down.
For one stunned second, she could not breathe.
Dirty water ran through her hair, soaked the pale gray maternity dress clinging to her seven-month-pregnant belly, and pooled around her shoes on the polished stone patio.
Brendan laughed.
His new girlfriend, Serena Cole, covered her mouth as though she were trying to hide amusement.
She failed.
Margaret Holloway still held the empty silver bucket.
Cassidy’s former mother-in-law looked satisfied.
“Maybe now you understand what happens when you show up where you are not wanted.”
Cassidy slowly lifted her face.
Water dripped from her eyelashes.
Her hands trembled.
Not from humiliation.
From cold.
And control.
For almost three years, Brendan’s family had mistaken her silence for weakness.
They called her ordinary.
Dependent.
Lucky.
Brendan had once told her she should be grateful he had “rescued” her from a middle-class life.
Margaret called Cassidy a financial burden even while Cassidy quietly paid the mortgage on the Holloway estate through a company account nobody in the family understood.
Now Brendan leaned against the garden table beside Serena.
“You should leave.”
Cassidy looked at him.
Then at Margaret.
Then at the people standing behind the glass doors of the mansion.
Board members.
Senior managers.
Family friends.
Several executives from Halcyon Global.
The company Brendan believed his family still controlled.
Cassidy reached into her wet handbag.
She removed her phone.
Margaret laughed.
“Calling your lawyer?”
“No.”
Cassidy typed three words.
Activate Protocol 7.
Then she pressed send.
Brendan smiled.
“What is Protocol 7?”
Cassidy slipped the phone back into her bag.
“You’ll know soon.”
Margaret rolled her eyes.
“You always did love drama.”
Cassidy looked toward the driveway.
“No.”
“I learned to prepare.”
Less than four minutes later, the first black SUV passed through the estate gates.
Then another.
Then a third.
Brendan straightened.
“What the hell?”
Six members of Halcyon Global Corporate Security stepped out.
Behind them came General Counsel Mara Quinn.
Then Chief Financial Officer Daniel Price.
Then an outside forensic accounting team.
Margaret’s expression changed.
Brendan walked forward.
“What are they doing here?”
Mara ignored him.
She went directly to Cassidy.
Her face tightened when she saw the wet dress.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.”
Mara looked at Cassidy’s stomach.
“Medical team is on the way.”
Brendan laughed.
“Why are you asking her?”
Mara turned.
“Because she activated Protocol 7.”
“So?”
Daniel Price answered.
“Protocol 7 is an emergency control procedure available only to Halcyon’s beneficial owner.”
Silence.
Serena lowered her champagne glass.
Brendan stared.
“What owner?”
Cassidy finally looked at him.
“Me.”
He laughed once.
No one else did.
Mara handed him a sealed notice.
“Effective immediately, all Holloway family discretionary accounts funded through Halcyon Global are frozen pending forensic review.”
Margaret went pale.
“What accounts?”
Daniel began listing them.
Estate maintenance.
Private travel.
Vehicle leases.
Club memberships.
Security.
Three corporate cards.
Two investment accounts.
Brendan stared at Cassidy.
“You’re lying.”
Cassidy took one slow breath.
“I own seventy-two percent of Halcyon Global.”
Nobody moved.
May you like
Then she added.
“And I have for four years.”
