Chapter 7 - The First Word

Grant ran.

Claire followed.

They found Noah on the floor beside his wheelchair.

Vanessa knelt beside him.

The chair lay on its side.

“What happened?” Grant demanded.

Vanessa looked horrified.

“He tried to stand.”

Claire knew immediately it was a lie.

Noah could move his legs slightly, but standing without support was impossible.

Grant dropped beside his son.

“Noah.”

The boy’s eyes went to Vanessa.

Then to Grant.

Grant saw it.

Really saw it.

The fear.

For perhaps the first time, he did not explain it away.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Leave us.”

Her expression stiffened.

“Grant—”

“Leave.”

Vanessa rose slowly.

As she passed Claire, the hatred in her eyes was naked.

Grant lifted Noah onto the bed.

Claire retrieved the wheelchair.

“Noah,” Grant said softly.

“I need you to tell me what happened.”

The boy trembled.

Grant took the alphabet sheet Claire handed him.

He pointed.

Nothing.

“Noah, please.”

Vanessa remained just outside the door.

Claire could see the shadow of her shoes.

Noah could too.

Claire closed the door.

The shadow disappeared.

Then Noah lifted one hand.

He pointed to the first letter.

P.

Then U.

Then S.

Then H.

Grant’s hand stopped moving.

“Push?”

Noah nodded.

Grant looked at Claire.

“Who pushed you?”

Noah’s lips parted.

At first, no sound came.

His throat moved.

Claire held her breath.

Grant leaned closer.

Then a broken whisper emerged.

“Van…”

Grant froze.

Noah tried again.

“Vanessa.”

The word was barely audible.

But it changed everything.

Grant’s face collapsed.

He pulled Noah against his chest.

The boy stiffened at first.

Then slowly held on.

Grant shut his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah began crying.

Not loudly.

Silently.

As though even tears had been trained to stay quiet.

Claire looked toward the door.

Vanessa was gone.

Grant called his attorney.

Then a private physician he trusted personally.

Then police.

But before any of them arrived, the mansion security system shut down.

Lights flickered.

The front gate opened.

May you like

Vanessa’s Mercedes vanished from the garage.

And so did the blue bottle.
