Chapter 13 - Vanessa’s Last Performance

Vanessa’s face went blank.

Richard stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

Grant remained near the doorway.

Police officers entered from the kitchen.

Vanessa looked at Claire.

Then at the cameras mounted behind the decorative vents.

“You recorded me.”

Grant did not answer.

Richard immediately began talking.

“I want a lawyer.”

One officer moved toward him.

Vanessa remained seated.

Strangely calm.

Then she smiled.

“This proves nothing.”

Grant stared at her.

“You admitted leaving Laura to die.”

“I said she was already dying.”

“You admitted sedating Noah.”

“I never said with what.”

“You admitted being at the garage.”

“So?”

Claire watched Vanessa rebuild herself in real time.

Every sentence became an explanation.

Every admission became ambiguity.

Every cruelty became misunderstanding.

Her attorney arrived within twenty minutes.

By midnight, Richard was in custody on financial charges connected to the stolen foundation money.

Vanessa was detained for questioning.

But prosecutors warned Grant that the homicide case would be difficult.

The accident was six years old.

Evidence had been destroyed.

Laura’s official cause of death had been trauma from the crash.

Proving that earlier medical assistance would have saved her would require experts.

Proving Vanessa caused the mechanical failure would require more.

Grant understood.

Claire did too.

They needed the original maintenance evidence.

Then Noah remembered something.

Two days later, he sat beside Claire in Daniel’s apartment.

He was speaking in fragments now.

One or two words at a time.

Claire showed him photographs.

Garage.

Car.

Vanessa.

Richard.

Noah shook his head at Richard.

Then he pointed at the photograph of Laura’s SUV.

“Man.”

“What man?”

Noah swallowed.

“Red shirt.”

Claire searched through old household photographs.

Noah rejected all of them.

Then Grant arrived carrying boxes of Laura’s belongings.

Inside one album was a picture taken at the mansion six years earlier.

A mechanic stood beside the driveway.

Red Whitman Auto Service shirt.

The name stitched over his pocket read TONY.

Noah pointed immediately.

Claire looked at Grant.

“Find Tony.”

Tony Alvarez had worked on Laura’s SUV the day before the crash.

He had disappeared from Massachusetts one week later.

Grant’s investigators located him in New Mexico.

When Grant called, Tony hung up.

When Claire called from another number, he listened.

She mentioned Noah.

There was silence.

Then Tony said four words.

“I knew he survived.”
