Chapter 20 - What Laura Knew

Grant listened without speaking.
Then he looked toward Noah.
“Not tonight.”
He ended the call.
Claire immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”
Grant hesitated.
Then handed her his phone.
An email attachment had arrived from federal investigators.
It contained financial records recovered during the Richard Halpern investigation.
Laura’s original foundation audit had uncovered more than stolen charity money.
Whitman Medical Technologies had been funding a private research contractor called Northstar Behavioral Systems.
Claire frowned.
“What is Northstar?”
“I don’t know.”
Grant looked disturbed.
“That’s the problem.”
The contracts carried Grant’s electronic approval.
But he had never seen them.
Richard had apparently inserted the documents into bulk authorizations.
Northstar received more than twenty-three million dollars over four years.
Its listed address led to an abandoned office building.
Its directors did not exist.
Claire remembered Vanessa’s final words at the cliff.
You have no idea what Grant’s company was really funding.
Grant opened another attachment.
A scanned page from Laura’s files.
Her handwriting covered the margins.
Richard knows.
Vanessa knows.
Someone inside Grant’s company is testing on children.
Claire felt the room turn cold.
Grant read the sentence again.
“This has nothing to do with Noah.”
Claire looked toward the living room.
Noah sat on the floor beside the couch, working on a puzzle.
Safe.
Laughing quietly at something Daniel had texted him.
“I hope you’re right.”
Grant scrolled farther.
There was one final file.
A photograph.
A group of executives stood outside a research facility.
Richard was there.
Vanessa was there.
And beside them stood a man Claire recognized.
Dr. Malcolm Pierce.
The psychiatrist who had falsified Noah’s records.
Grant’s face hardened.
“He said Vanessa blackmailed him.”
“Maybe she did.”
Claire pointed at the date.
The photograph had been taken two years before Vanessa began paying him to discredit Noah.
Grant understood immediately.
“He was involved before Noah ever became his patient.”
Claire nodded.
A knock sounded at the front door.
Grant looked toward the security monitor.
A courier stood outside holding a black envelope.
No return address.
Grant opened the door.
The courier handed it over and left.
Inside was a single photograph of Laura.
She stood outside the same Northstar facility.
On the back, someone had written a message.
Laura discovered the wrong secret.
Vanessa was only the beginning.
Grant stared at the words.
Claire looked toward Noah.
For six years, they had believed one cruel woman had destroyed his family.
Now they understood something much more frightening.
Vanessa had not created the darkness surrounding the Whitmans.
She had simply learned how to use it.
Grant folded the photograph.
“No more secrets.”
Claire looked at him.
“No more looking away.”
Across the room, Noah lifted his head.
He had heard them.
This time, he did not lower his eyes.
He rolled his wheelchair toward them.
“What happens now?”
Grant knelt beside his son.
Claire stood beside them.
And for the first time, nobody answered for Noah.
Nobody decided what he could handle.
Nobody told him silence was safer.
Grant placed Laura’s photograph on the table.
“Now we find out what your mother was trying to stop.”
Outside, the winter wind moved through the trees.
Inside, three people who had once been divided by money, fear, and silence looked at the same buried truth.
Vanessa was in prison.
Laura had finally received justice.
Noah had his voice back.
But somewhere inside the empire Grant Whitman had spent his life building, another secret was waiting.
May you like
And this time, they would face it together.
